Padres officials said Friday that catcher Nick Hundley is fine after undergoing successful hernia surgery on Wednesday.

Hundley, who hit .238 with eight homers and 30 RBIs in 78 games, suffered the injury in May. He is expected to be completely recovered when the team reports to spring training in February.

In other news, veterans Brian Giles and Henry Blanco filed for free agency.

Manager Bud Black indicated in October that he would like Blanco to return next season to continue tutoring Hundley.

Giles, who came to the Padres in an August 2003 trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates, is unlikely to return. The veteran outfielder suffered a knee injury in mid-June and didn't return, finishing with a .191 average and 23 RBIs.
