May 3-9 was Be Kind to Animals Week, an annual tradition that dates to 1915. It is an entire week set aside for us to celebrate and honor the roles animals play in all of our lives, as well as to advocate for their well-being. And although Be Kind to Animals Week has passed, it's important to remember that being kind to animals is something we can do every day, all year long.
Here are some tips from American Humane Society to make our community a better place for animals:
- Be the animals' voice: Be an advocate for the humane treatment of animals and educate others -- especially children -- about doing the same. Stay informed about policies and legislation that can affect the animals in our community and throughout the country.
- Report animal abuse: If you see something that looks suspicious, don't hesitate to contact your local animal control department to report your concerns. Remember, you are their first line of defense. Some examples include keeping a dog tethered without food, water, or shelter; neglecting an animal when it is in need of medical attention; keeping animals confined to an enclosed area without adequate exercise; and leaving an animal inside a vehicle for any reason, no matter the weather or temperature. If you live in Escondido, San Marcos or Poway, contact Escondido Humane Society Animal Control at 760-888-2275.
- Respect and appreciate wildlife: All animals deserve to be treated humanely, even if they aren't family pets. Consider creating an inviting space in your yard and garden, and include items such as a bird feeder and birdbath.
- Share kindness with your own pets: Keep your pet's vaccinations up-to-date and make sure they visit the vet regularly. Pets should wear proper identification at all times and be microchipped so they can be returned home quickly if lost.
- Adopt a pet from a shelter or rescue: Thousands of loving pets of all shapes, ages and sizes are waiting in shelters and rescues, hoping to find a new family. If you are ready to bring a pet into your home, consider adopting from your local shelter or rescue group. There is no better feeling than knowing you have given an animal in need a second chance at happiness. If you aren't ready to adopt, consider fostering, volunteering or donating to a shelter or animal-related cause.
