Motorists should brace for significant delays tonight if they plan to travel south on Interstate 5 in North County, the California Department or Transportation said.
Beginning at 9 p.m. tonight, construction crews will begin shutting down southbound I-5 lanes from just north of Manchester Avenue to just south of the San Dieguito River bridge, Caltrans officials said in a news release.
"By 11 p.m., four of the five lanes will be closed to traffic," said Caltrans spokesman Edward Cartagena. "We urge people to avoid the area if possible or to seek alternate routes such as Coast Highway 101 to reach their destinations."

Then later this week, on Wednesday, construction crews plan to close Maya Linda Road and Carroll Canyon Road in the vicinity of Interstate 15, as part of the ongoing work to expand the I-15 express lanes.
The closure is scheduled to occur every weekday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., for about two weeks.
Caltrans said crews will pave Carroll Canyon Road between Maya Linda Road and I-15, and Maya Linda between Gold Coast Drive and Carroll Canyon.
