Students in Interfaith Community Services' Transitional Youth Academy will showcase their photographic talents Saturday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the second annual Inside Out photo exhibit.
The show will be at the OPT Underground Gallery at 918 Mission Ave. in Oceanside and will feature the work of 22 at-risk youths, mostly from Oceanside, ages 14 through 17.
The academy provides at-risk youths with behavioral health counseling, crisis intervention, gang prevention lessons, academic tutoring, vocational assessments, career exploration, financial literacy lessons, educational development, life-skills workshops and self-esteem building activities such as the photography exhibit.
Students went on excursions throughout the county to take pictures. For one excursion, Oceanside City Councilman Rocky Chavez took youths to the top of the highest building in Oceanside.
"These young photographers had a different perspective on Oceanside this day looking from the sky downwards," Chavez said in a press release. "It was intriguing to observe their concentration and focus on their subject."
Interfaith's public relations special event coordinator, Christine Vaughan, said the community can help the students and the program through an auction and sale at the show. Bids on framed photos will begin at $50, and unframed prints can be purchased for $25. Notecards with images taken by students can be purchased for $8.
Admission to the show is free and includes live acoustic entertainment, wine and hors d'oeuvres, and a meet-and-greet with the student photographers.
The student photos will be exhibited at the gallery through Nov. 13. The gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. daily.
