James Romano, 72
TEMECULA -- James Joseph Romano, 72, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at Inland Valley Regional Medical Center in Wildomar.
He was born Oct. 24, 1931, in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was an engineer. He served in the U.S. Air Force.
Mr. Romano is survived by his wife, Mary Katherine McFaul Romano of Temecula; sons James Romano of Boise, Idaho, and Tony Romano of Murrieta; daughters Theresa Hizon of Temecula and Patti Rooney of Boise, Idaho; and sister, Tessie Buccelatto of Brooklyn.
Visitation is scheduled from 2 to 4:30 p.m. and funeral service at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at Miller-Jones Mortuary & Crematory in Sun City. Interment will be at Riverside National Cemetery.

Jerri Conley, 59
PERRIS -- Jerri Lee Conley, 59, died Tuesday, June 1, 2004, of complications from a stroke in Loma Linda.
Born Nov. 6, 1944, in Los Angeles, she lived in Perris for seven years.
Mrs. Conley was preceded in death by her father, Edward Douglas Thomas; mother, Irene Gray; stepmother, Helen Thomas; sisters Wilma Jo Thomas and Barbara Robinson; son, Edward Douglas Conley; and granddaughter, Patricia Harper. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Bunnie Ray Conley of Perris; son and daughter-in-law Jerry Lee and Tyese Conley of Bellflower; daughters and sons-in-law Carol and Eulis Knox of Bowie, Bonnie and Gary Harris of Murrieta, Bobbie and Shonton Brown of Temecula and Danielle Conley of Perris; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Viewing is scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 8, at Arlington Mortuary. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, at Faith Community Church in Riverside. Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Riverside National Cemetery.

Betty Varner, 65
MURRIETA -- Betty Kay Varner, 65, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, of colon cancer.
Born Aug. 15, 1938, in Breckenridge, Minn., she lived in Murrieta for five years. She retired from the dental field in 1986. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
Mrs. Varner was preceded in death by her husband, William "Bill" F. Varner Jr., on April 19, 1992. She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law Bob and Renee Varner of Lexington, Ky., and Damon and fiance Angelica Varner of Hemet; daughters and sons-in-law Sandy and Joe Elliott of Murrieta and Paige and Ron Barrett of San Marcos; sisters Joe Ann Poore of North Carolina and Carol Helton of Arkansas; and grandchildren Tara, Marley, Brittany, Whitney, Reagan and Meagan.
A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at the Church of Christ, 318 W. Sixth St., in Escondido with Jere Jarrell officiating. Private interment at Eternal Hills Memorial Park in Oceanside is planned.

Mehmet Gocken, 83
SAN MARCOS - Dr. Mehmet S. Gocken, M.D., 83, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at a local board and care home.
Born Jan. 1, 1921, in Izmir, Turkey, he lived in San Marcos for 48 years. He was an anesthesiologist for more than 30 years.
Dr. Gocken is survived by his son, Deniz Gocken of San Diego; daughter Necla Goodfellow of Victoria, Texas; and three grandchildren.
Cremation with private interment at Hillsdale Rural Cemetery in Hillsdale, N.Y., are planned.

Richard Budlong, 72
ESCONDIDO - Richard N. Budlong, 72, died Saturday, May 29, 2004.
He was born July 13, 1931, in Providence, R.I. He worked at Rockwell International. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. He was a member of the Church of St. Timothy and the Little League District 31.
Mr. Budlong is survived by his wife of 15 years, Michiel Budlong of Escondido; sons and daughters-in-law Steve and Rachel Budlong of Carlsbad and Steve and Carole Rickman of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; daughters and sons-in-law Sandy and Rick Vilela of Vista, Stacy Rickman of Mission Viejo and Kathy and Bob Edberg of Campobello, S.C.; and grandchildren Natasha, Jake, Zach, Casey, Alexis and Ashley.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 7, at the Church of St. Timothy in Escondido with the Revs. Jim Rafferty and Mike Early officiating. Private inurnment at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery is planned.

Mary Webb, 81
ESCONDIDO - Mary Louise Webb, 81, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at a local convalescent home.
Born Oct. 4, 1922, in Janesville, Ill., she lived in Escondido for five years and San Marcos for six years previously. She was a homemaker for 58 years.
Mrs. Webb was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Webb, on June 7, 1999.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-laws, Donald L. and Rosemary Webb of San Marcos, Jerry W. and Jeannette Webb of Shelton, Wash., and Max E. and Patricia Webb of El Cajon; sister Pauline Best of Tuscola, Ill.; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Visitation is planned from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 7, at Allen Bros. Mortuary, San Marcos Chapel. Graveside service will follow at San Marcos Cemetery.

Born Feb. 8, 1983, in Harbor City, he was a college student.

ESCONDIDO - John D. Meacham, 51, died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at Palomar Medical Center.
Born Nov. 22, 1952, in Calexico, he lived in Escondido one year and previously in Vista. He was a general construction worker and was a wood craftsman. He served in the U.S. Army
Mr. Meacham was preceded in death by his mother, Katherine Meacham, in 2001; father Sam Meacham in 1976; and brother Marcus Meacham in 1983.

Clara Schwab, 82
SAN DIEGO - Clara Louise Schwab, 82, died Monday, May 31, 2004, at her home of lymphoma.
Born June 11, 1921, in Denver, she lived in San Diego County, for 34 years (she lived in Vista until 2000.)
She was president of the Docent Council for the Gamble House in Pasadena, where she grew up during the Depression and WWII. She helped restore the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe in Vista. She was the curator of the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe. She enjoyed teaching people about California history.
Mrs. Schwab was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Schwab.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Garth Malcolm and Alice Mora Corbin of San Diego; grandchildren Leal and Erin; and one great-grandson.
Inurnment is planned for 11:30 a.m. Friday, June 11, at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego.

ESCONDIDO - Raquel Enriquez, 77, died Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at her home.
Born July 8, 1926, in Los Osotoles Jalisco, Mexico, she lived in Escondido for 39 years and was a homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and cooking and was a member of St. Mary's for 39 years.
Mrs. Enriquez was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Manuel Enriquez, in 2003.
She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Alfred and Hermelinda Enriquez of Santa Ana, Rudy and Aljandrina Enriquez, Manuel and Renee Enriquez, and Peter and Lisa Enriquez, all of Escondido, and Martha Enriquez of San Marcos; daughters and sons-in-law Frances and Roger Pippins of Arizona, Maria and Reynaldo Gonzalez of Escondido and Rosa and Bob Saylor of Hot Springs, Ark., brother Felide Galvez of Mexico; sisters and brothers-in-law Simona Galvez, Qutiloe Galvez, Maria de Los Angeles Galvez, Maria Aucilia and Chico Galvez (all of Mexico); brothers-in-law Jose Palomo of Escondido and Jesus and Julia Enriquez of Mexico.

RANCHO BERNARDO - Frances B. Moore, 83, died Monday, May 24, 2004.
Born May 7, 1921, in Middletown, Conn., she lived in Rancho Bernardo for more than 30 years.
Mrs. Moore was preceded in death by her husband, O.D. Moore. She is survived by her sister, Helen Arnold of Milford, Conn.; brother John Brenenstuhl of Milford; niece Barbara Ireland of Milford; and nephew Gary Ireland of Milford.
A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, June 11, at St. Rafael's Catholic Church, 17252 Bernardo Center Drive in Rancho Bernardo. Entombment will follow at 11:30 a.m. at El Camino Mortuary and Memorial Park in Sorrento Valley. A celebration of life will take place at 12:30 p.m. at the Rancho Bernardo Country Club.

Penny Longpre, 81
VISTA - Penny Longpre, 81, died June 3, 2004.
Born in Utah, Dec. 4, 1922, Penny had been a resident of Vista for over 16 years. She was an accomplished fine artist, teaching her skills to young and old, owning several art galleries including the Longpre Gallery in La Canada, where she showed not only many of her own fine works but those of other notable artists throughout the country. Penny was a very active member of the Shadowridge Country Club in Vista, and for countless years acted as the primary chairperson for their many benefits and gala tournaments. As a former Big Band singer, Penny was well known for her many musical productions put on at the clubs she belonged to. Penny shared her talents by doing art restoration for the Catholic Church and was active in several other charitable organizations. She was a member of the Mayflower Society and the Rotary Club. In La Canada, she was voted "Woman of the Year" for her many contributions to the Flintridge-La Canada community.
Penny was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Jack Longpre; and daughter Debbie Longpre. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Rod and Karen Longpre of La Crescenta; daughter and son-in-law Dina and Chris Grant of Vista. She has six grandchildren, Jonathan and Patrick, of Vista and Bryan, Jessica, Matthew and Cory of La Crescenta.
Funeral services will be June 8 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at Eternal Hills Mortuary in Oceanside.
