Friends plan book sale

LAKE ELSINORE ---- The Friends of the Mission Trail Library is holding its annual book sale Friday and Saturday.

The sale, which will feature more than a hundred books of all varieties, will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days in the community room of the library. Organizers say the sale will include mystery, fiction, Western, romance, gardening books and videos.

The library is at 34303 Mission Trail in Lake Elsinore.

Benefit concert features Christian singer

CANYON LAKE ---- Noted Christian musician Sarah Kelly will perform a benefit concert Friday to support Mothers of Preschoolers.

Kelly performs about 250 shows each year internationally and also leads worship seminars and song writing classes.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. at Canyon Lake Community Church, 30515 Railroad Canyon Road. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the chance to enter a gift basket drawing. Tickets are $5 in advance or $8 at the door.

Halloween fun planned at park

MENIFEE ---- Halloween activities for all ages will be featured Friday at Lazy Creek Park.

The event features elicit haunted house tours, pumpkin carving, crafts, jumpers, a candy carnival and some "trick-or-treat safety gear" from 4 to 9 p.m. Admission costs $5.

The park is at 26480 Lazy Creek Road, off Evans Road north of Newport Road.

Halloween carnival coming up

TEMECULA ---- The city is throwing an old-fashioned Halloween family carnival from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Ronald Reagan Sports Park in the roller hockey parking lot.

The festival will include costume and screaming contests, carnival games, food vendors, face painting, a tattoo artist, fun jumps and more. A wristband good for all activities will cost $5.

Bel Villagio shops mark Halloween

TEMECULA ---- Bel Villagio Shopping Center will be handing out a scary amount of candy, as well as a host of tricks and other treats, from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Activities include a jolly jumper, pirate ship, money machine, live radio remote by KFROG and more. The action will be at the Center Courtyard near Oggi's Pizza and costumed customers are encouraged to come.

Magic show, costume contest on tap

LAKE ELSINORE ---- A Spooktacular Halloween Magic Show and Costume Contest will be held Saturday at the Lake Elsinore Outlets, featuring a magician, children's costume contest and trick-or-treating at participating shops.

The 6:15 p.m. costume contest includes age categories from newborn to 11 and older and winners will receive a $25 gift card. The magic show will be at 5:30 p.m. and trick or treating is from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

The outlets are on the west side of Interstate 15, between the Nichols Road and Central Avenue exits.

Church hosts child and family psychologist

TEMECULA ---- Sunridge Community Church will host nationally syndicated columnist and parenting expert John Rosemond at a parenting seminar Monday.

Rosemond has worked with families and children since 1971 and ceased a family psychology practice in North Carolina in 1990 to devote his time to speaking and writing. He has written 12 best-sellers, organizers say.

The event is open to the public and begins at 7 p.m. at the church, 42299 Winchester Road in Temecula. Parents, grandparents and parents-to-be are encouraged to attend. Reservations are necessary and the cost is $15 per person.

Applications accepted for holiday parade

TEMECULA ---- Applications are due Wednesday for the city's 17th annual Santa's Electric Light Parade, to be held Dec. 4.

The parade will begin at 7 p.m. and follow the same route as last year, north along Jefferson Avenue from Del Rio Road to Overland Drive. It is sponsored in part by McDonald's of Temecula.

PBS farmer to entertain, educate kids

TEMECULA ---- The Theater Foundation is presenting performances of the children's show "Farmer Jason" on Nov. 6 at the Old Town Temecula Community Theater.

The PBS show was nominated for an Emmy award for Best Children's Show, and the "farmer" is known for offering a fun-filled show that teaches subtle lessons about ecology, exercise and history.

The performance will be at 1:45 p.m. at 42051 Main St. in Old Town. Tickets are $5, with proceeds benefitting the foundation's Arts Connection program. To purchase tickets, call 951-541-2588.

Events to celebrate local heritage

TEMECULA ---- Heritage Day will be celebrated Nov. 7, in conjunction with the opening of the annual Erle Stanley Gardner exhibit.

Heritage Day performances and presentations will include Ballet Folklorico, the Judy Taylor Wild West Show, Pam Grender as Helen Hunt Jackson, Blacksmith Frank Matthies and his Blue Grass Band, Dale Garcia as Old Town sheriff, Temecula Valley Prospectors and more.

The Gardner event will include Gordon Johnson leading a discussion of Gardner's writing and a comparison to Raymond Chandler, who spent time with Gardner at Rancho del Paisano in Temecula. Other guests include Sheila Lowe, a forensic handwriting expert, and author Kara Lennox.

The events will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sam Hicks Monument Park, 41970 Moreno Road.

Flyers group plans October event

TEMECULA ---- The Temecula Valley Flyers is planning a "fun fly" event for Nov. 14.

The group is a nonprofit organization whose members operate a field for radio-controlled airplanes near Wine Country.

Fuel-powered and electric aircraft are flown at the field regularly.

Members can provide instruction to those new to the hobby and they put on several community outreach events each year.

CPR, first aid training offered

LAKE ELSINORE ---- A one-day CPR and first aid class, with certifications, will be offered Nov. 7 at Lake Community Center.

The CPR class will run from 8 a.m. to noon and the first aid training will be from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. The cost for both is $45 and the center is at 310 W. Graham Ave. in Lake Elsinore.

Blood drives set this week

Two blood drives are scheduled in Southwest County over the next week.

The drives will be held from:

-- 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Kohl's, 30152 Haun Road in Menifee.

-- 2 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Lake Elsinore Market Place, 29261 Central Ave. in Lake Elsinore.

Donors must be at least 16 years old, healthy and weigh at least 110 pounds; the process takes about an hour.

Michelle's Place hosts exercise class

MURRIETA ----- Le bed exercise classes are offered twice a week at Michelle's Place.

The free classes are held at 7 p.m. Mondays and 10 a.m. Wednesdays.

Le bed is a relaxing way to increase the circulation in the lymph system after breast surgery.

Senior association to meet Tuesday

WILDOMAR ---- The Wildomar Senior Association will meet for a potluck on Tuesday.

The group meets at 11:30 a.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the Canyon Mobile Homes clubhouse, 21601 Canyon Drive. Visitors are welcome.

Half-Century Singles outlines dates

The November events for Half-Century Singles include a happy hour in Temecula and a champagne brunch in Menifee.

The group, for singles ages 50 and older, will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at Harry's Pacific Grill Restaurant, 41577 Margarita Road in Temecula, and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 22 at Menifee Lakes Country Club, 29875 Menifee Lakes Drive.

The club also hosts events for ages 40 to 60.

Senior center offers Tai Chi classes

LAKE ELSINORE ---- A new Tai Chi class will be held Thursday mornings at the Lake Elsinore Senior Center.

Taught by Master Gustavo Poletti, students can enjoy the benefits of practicing the ancient art, including more efficient breathing, lowered blood pressure and increased strength, flexibility and bone density.

The cost is $6.50 per class, payable at class and new students can join anytime. The center is at 420 E. Lakeshore Drive, adjacent to Lakepoint Park.
