San Marcos rotary club to host golf tournament
SAN MARCOS ---- The Rotary Club of San Marcos will host its annual golf tournament at 12:45 p.m. Oct. 20 at Twin Oaks Golf Course, 1425 N. Twin Oaks Valley Road. Check-in begins at 11 a.m., followed by a putting contest and box lunch. The format: Everyone plays from the best tee shot, then plays their own ball in, and the two best scores are used. Proceeds will benefit local Rotary projects. Cost is $125 per player. Cost includes a tee package, dinner and awards. Golf items, wine and gift certificates will be auctioned during dinner. Soiree to hold concert

Photographers to show in city hall

Fallbrook Boys & Girls club to hold tree fundraiser
FALLBROOK ---- The Boys & Girls Clubs of North County will hold a presale Christmas tree fundraiser from Oct. 16 through Nov. 16. Fliers are available at the club. Fresh trees from the Northwest, stands, wreaths and garland can be ordered. Tree prices range from $15 to $130. Wreaths cost $24 to $45. Stands cost $15 to $50. Garland is $2 per foot. Pet adoption to be held
FALLBROOK ---- The Fallbrook Animal Sanctuary will host a pet adoption from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 17 at Major Market, 845 S. Sam's club to host open house celebration
VISTA ---- Sam's Club in Vista will celebrate its 10th anniversary with an open house beginning 7 a.m. Oct. 14 at 1900 University Drive. -- 12:30 to 2 p.m.: "Long-term Care: When Planning Makes Sense." This class will teach students how to select a company and structure a long-term care policy. Fee is $3.
-- 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 20-29 Tuesdays and Thursdays: "Introduction to Computers." This four-session class will discuss computer terminology, keyboard and mouse skills, games, exchanging e-mail, surfing the Internet, and basic word processing. Fee is $40 plus a $3 materials fee.
Women's group to host talk on international space station

Bank sets up community book drive
POWAY ---- The Poway branch of San Diego National Bank is organizing a Community Housing Works book drive from 9 a.m. to noon Oct. 17 in the parking lot at 13395 Poway Road. Bring books that are appropriate for kindergartners through 12th-graders, including story books, read-aloud books, adventure stories, novels, classics, science, astronomy, math, nature, hobbies, crafts or how-to books. Marines give back to seniors
CARLSBAD ---- Camp Pendleton Marines recently visited the La Costa Glen continuing-care retirement community in Carlsbad to host a 'Thank You' barbecue and appreciation ceremony for the seniors. More than 100 Marines and three retired generals were on hand for the event, organized by the Rotary Club of Camp Pendleton to thank seniors for their efforts in assisting Marines and their families with cash donations and household goods. The Marine Corps Color Guard presented the colors at the ceremony, and the Rotary Club presented a plaque to Gen. and Mrs. Simlik that was dedicated to all of the residents of La Costa Glen. Retired Major Gen. Carl Hoffman and retired Brigadier Gen. George Dooley also attended the event.
Recycled clothes collected for holiday program
CARLSBAD ---- The Gemological Institute of America in Carlsbad recently joined forces with North County's Community Resource Center for an event designed to help families struggling to make ends meet. The Institute challenged its staff and students to donate gently used clothes for the center's Holiday Baskets program. Local band "Semisi and Fula Bula" donated its time to support the initiative and played an hour mix of rock, reggae, calypso, jazz, Latin, hip-hop and folk music as participants dropped off donations. More than 150 GIA staff members and students donated six carloads of jackets, blankets and other items. Vista resident named ambassador
NORTH COUNTY ---- Easter Seals Southern California Disability Services has named Vista resident and Easter Seals participant Brandon Davis as ambassador for the 2009-10 fiscal year. Davis will attend community events, fundraisers and other agency functions, as a spokesperson for Easter Seals services that support children and adults with autism, Down syndrome, muscular dystrophy and cerebral palsy. Photographers displays their work in Vista, Escondido
NORTH COUNTY ---- The PhotoArts Group will display 15 members' artworks in a year-round show entitled "Summer Diary" from October until Jan. 23 at the Chiropractic Rehabilitation Wellness Center in Vista, 115 Main St. An artists reception for the 15 photographers participating in the show will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Oct. 24 at the wellness center.
