Diamond Ball seems a fitting title for an event held the weekend of Valentine's Day.
Supporters of the Boys & Girls Club of Vista would appear to agree, as they're snapping up tickets for Saturday's gala at the Shadowridge Country Club. Around 40 seats remain for the dinner-dance featuring Channel 10 news anchor Kimberly Hunt and her husband, former Charger and current sports-talk host Billy Ray Smith as emcees.
The Chase Morrin Jazz Trio will provide entertainment at the 6 p.m. gala. Morrin was a member of the Boys & Girls Club of San Dieguito. Plenty of vacation packages will be auctioned, including a trip to Maui during spring break, said Matt Koumaras, the club's executive director.
The club will do a special dedication at the event to Dan Piro, a board member and long-time supporter who died Jan. 27. Piro created the club's Little Padres Park.
An active senior league baseball player, Piro will have his No. 9 retired by the club. He wore that number to salute his favorite player, Ted Williams.
"If not for him, we wouldn't have a baseball field. We would have a parking lot of dust and dirt," said Koumaras.
Tickets are $100 and available by calling 760-724-6606, ext. 10.
Commercial view: Del's Barber Shop didn't get screen time during the Super Bowl, although Dan Engelbrecht, owner of the Escondido shop was featured among several other small business owners during a Miller beer spot. That ad directed viewers to millerhighlife.com to see commercials for Del's and the other small businesses. ... It didn't make the Super Bowl, but a Carl's Jr. commercial with former San Marcos resident Jamielee Darley has showed up a few times on the tube. Darley, runner-up in the recent search for the next Victoria's Secret model, is the blonde waitress in a Carl's Jr. ad titled "Kid's Menu." She brings crayons to the guy who orders Carl's grilled cheese bacon burger.
Fast food: You could call it the "Soup-er Bowl" when employees of Anderson Direct Marketing in Poway take the challenge from the Rincon Indians to see who is the quickest at packing meal boxes at The Angel's Depot.
Thirty-member teams from each group will square off at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in "The Rincon Throwdown." They'll take spots along the assembly line at the depot, which provides emergency food packages for older adults in need, to see which team can fill 275 food boxes in the least amount of the time.
The winner gets its name on a perpetual trophy, while the loser either has to buy lunch for the winners or purchase 550 cans of roast beef and gravy for future food boxes. Serving as referees will be fire chiefs Kevin Crawford of Carlsbad and Gary Fisher of Vista.
"We've never done a challenge where both teams are there at the same time," said Susan Hall, executive director of the Vista-based nonprofit. "It ought to be pretty interesting."
It's all Greek: Mixing business with pleasure is the plan for a tour to Greece by the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce.
The chamber is holding an orientation from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday for the trip, which will run from Oct. 13-22. The five-day land trip and four-day cruise will take participants to Athens, Delphi, Mycenae, Rhodes, Crete, Santorini and Kusadasi, Turkey. The cost is $2,990.
This is the third chamber-sponsored overseas trip. Previous journeys were to China and Hong Kong. The tours provide opportunities for North County businesses to establish relationships with foreign companies.
"We try to have fun, as well as making business contacts," said Ted Owen, the chamber's chief executive.
Call Deveney Gibbons at 760-931-8400 to reserve a spot at the orientation.
