SOLANA BEACH - The family of Ryan Goodall is seeking answers to what caused a collision that killed the young Encinitas man last week.
Goodall, who would have turned 29 last Saturday, was headed south on Highway 101 the afternoon of March 11 when his motorcycle collided with a second vehicle, which was pulling out of the driveway of Frogs Fitness Center on the 500 block of the highway, authorities said.
Despite efforts by paramedics, Goodall was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, 85-year-old Jack Beim of Del Mar, was uninjured and his vehicle sustained minor damage.
Goodall's family members said they had some concerns about the factors that contributed to the crash and don't want people to assume he is at fault, his brother-in-law Lance Hetherington said.
Doug Allen, traffic investigator for the Encinitas sheriff's department, said Monday that an investigation is continuing and neither driver has been determined to be at fault.
Allen was mum on details of the ongoing investigation, but said the "movements (Beim) made as far as pulling out and making a left turn … are both legal maneuvers."
The area where the crash occurred is also not known for a high number of traffic accidents, and overall Solana Beach has a low collision rate, he said.
Investigations, which can include diagrams and reconstruction of the crash, can take the "better part of the month" to complete, Allen said.
Hetherington, also of Encinitas, said finding out what caused the crash is something Goodall would have wanted his family to do.
He remembered his Goodall as a warm, generous person who was "always doing stuff for other people," such as cooking dinner for 30 friends just because he enjoyed being with them.
"We've been hearing from friends, we didn't know he was loved by so many people," Hetherington said.
Goodall's sister, Kendra Goodall, said he "always made people feel like they were family. He was quick on saying the right thing."
If she had to pick one word to describe her brother, Kendra Goodall said, it would be "irreplaceable."
"Friends say they'll never have another friend like him," she said.
Goodall, who graduated from the Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad, ran a carpet cleaning business called AC Services. He is also survived by his parents, sister, two half-brothers, infant niece and 14-year-old nephew, who was "like a brother to him."
Services for Goodall will be held at 4 p.m. today at St. James Academy, 623 South Nardo Avenue, Solana Beach.
