GOLF: Nationwide Tour event coming to Soboba
By Staff and wire reports | ∞
SAN JACINTO ---- The Nationwide Tour appears to be returning to Southern California in 2009 in a brand new spot with an impressive purse.
Beginning next year, the $1 million Soboba Classic will be contested at the Country Club at Soboba Springs, becoming only one of three events on the tour with that large of a purse.
The PGA Tour, which operates the Nationwide Tour as a minor-league tour of sorts, signed a four-year contract, according to tribal information officer Mike Hiles. The club is on the Soboba Indian Reservation.
According the announcement, The Golf Channel will televise all four tournament rounds. Specific dates have not been released, though the event is expected to be held in the fall.
Nationwide Tour President Bill Calfee said in a statement that the tournament at Soboba will bring the reservation to the world stage, and promised the competition will be fierce.
"Golf fans who come out to Soboba Springs will witness a much heightened competitive environment, as each and every stroke will have potential bearing on whether or not a competitor plays his way onto the golf world's greatest stage, the PGA Tour, beginning in 2010," Calfee said.
Golfer Ricky Barnes was on hand for the announcement news conference and luncheon.
"I have no doubt the Soboba Classic will be a great addition to the Nationwide Tour," he said.
The event returns to the Nationwide Tour to Southern California after a one-year hiatus. It replaces the Mark Christopher Charity Classic, which was held at Empire Lakes in Rancho Cucamonga from 2000 to 2007, on the tour's schedule. That event was also known as the Inland Empire Open, which was held at Moreno Valley Ranch in the 1990s before its move to Empire Lakes.
