OCEANSIDE: Suspect wounded, dog killed in police shooting
Man in critical condition Sunday night
By COLLEEN MENSCHING - Staff Writer | ∞
OCEANSIDE ---- A man was wounded and a pitbull was killed Sunday morning, both shot during an altercation with police at a residence in the 4000 block of Lonnie Street, Oceanside Police officials said.
Gregory Kwok, 48, was in critical condition Sunday night, suffering from at least one gunshot wound to his torso, according to police and hospital officials.
Police were called Shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday because Kwok was fighting with his father, who also lives at the Lonnie Street address, Sgt. Kelan Poorman said.
Before he was shot, Kwok, with the pitbull in tow, confronted officers, Poorman said. An altercation led to gunfire, wounding Kwok and killing his dog, Poorman said.
No other injuries were reported.
Poorman said three officers were at the scene at the time of the shooting, but he declined to say who they were, how many used their weapons or how many shots were fired.
He said officers were already on their way to Lonnie Street because of the fight when neighbors reported hearing shots fired near the home.
No information was available about whether a gun was found at the scene.
Poorman said he did not know if Kwok has a criminal record or if there is a history of domestic disturbances at the Kwok residence.
Lonnie Street resident Alvin Fletcher said he was working outside when he saw police officers coming up the street on foot with a dog.
He said he heard shouts once the officers reached the Kwok residence and then three shots.
"Pow, pow, pow ---- like that," Fletcher said.
Fletcher said he is one of the few original homeowners on the block, but that the Kwok family has been in the area since at least the 1970s. Fletcher said the neighborhood is usually quiet ---- a truck was taken from him once and kids made off with some of his soda on another occasion.
Sunday morning's shooting drew more officers than he'd ever seen in one place, he said.

murder wrote on Oct 26, 2008 7:26 PM:is what I call it if a K9 is the same as a police officer then why do they have the right to murder a inocent pit bull? isint that the same as shooting a unarmed person ? once again we have trigger happy lawless cowboys running the streets.
Response to Thank You wrote on Oct 26, 2008 9:29 PM:I second that! They always to have to deal with the worst! We are fortunate to have the talent!
Good Job wrote on Oct 26, 2008 9:39 PM:No way I would want to be a cop. A thankless job. Kudos for the officers who responded and had to deal with situations that were not of their making.
to murder wrote on Oct 26, 2008 10:29 PM:The dog was shot after attacking the officers...i have been saying all day the only true victim in this is the dog. It is unfortunate the dog was used by the suspect in that way and unfortunate the dog died, however, this is not the officer's fault...it's not like they woke up that day and decided to kill a dog today!
Did anyone read the story wrote on Oct 26, 2008 10:39 PM:Neighbors call police after hearing the gunshots from the house? Then they arrive to find this maniac not complying? Please he doesn't comply, he has a Pit Bull that attacks them and they think he has a gun! That is all good with me! What they have to have him shoot them first! No way! Better him then the police! This guy was loose cannon and who cares if he was nuts or not! This is situation isn't a therapist couch! It's a dangerous situation where if the police wiat to long, they will die, this guy won't go to trial until three years later and some liberalcourt will release him! No way! Good job OPD! They don't play! They want to go home at night!
I love how the local news tries to play this up wrote on Oct 26, 2008 10:41 PM:Neighbors are outraged! Not all the neighbors hate the cops! They respond to these callsand have to stop the threat! Sometimes even with dealy force! Channel 8 was the worst! Shame on you!

Les wrote on Oct 27, 2008 2:04 AM:What a couple of buffoons. Do you think this guy brought out a pit bull so the officers could pet the nice doggie, or maybe was it a bit more sinister? Blame the guy who brought out the pit bull to threaten police officers, not the police officers who, I’m certain, were forced into a situation they didn’t want.
Neighbor and friend wrote on Oct 27, 2008 2:33 AM:I've known Greg for eleven years. He's a great guy and is always ready to lend a hand to anyone in need. He only had the pit bull described in this article for a few weeks and he took it in because no one else wanted it. His previous dog, a little Italian Greyhound that he loved dearly, died several months ago. He has shown nothing but kindness to me and my family. Please, if you don't know him, don't comment. It's just hurtful to his friends and family to have strangers feel like they have the right to pass judgement.

JimRT wrote on Oct 27, 2008 6:23 AM:To "murder"
How do you know this idiot did not tell his dog to "get 'em" and then let his dog loose? If I saw a pit bull coming at me (with encouragement from his owner) I would smoke him too. I guess you are like Crocodile Dundee.
When you attacked by a pit bull is not the time to ask, “Maybe it’s the owner that brought him up bad”.
To Murder wrote on Oct 27, 2008 6:49 AM:Since you weren't there and definately don't know the facts ,how and the heck can you say "once again we have trigger happy lawless cowboys running the streets." Witneses said the male suspect saw the police coming, went back into the house, got his pitbull, came back outside and confronted the officers. Apparently you haven't seen what a pitbull can do when used as a weapon, look up the stats how many children and adults they have KILLED by either running loose or their owners commands. You are clueless, I would bet a million you wouldn't try and pet a pit charging you. I'll wait to make judgement as to why the officers shot the male when I hear all the facts, not like you.
FTM wrote on Oct 27, 2008 7:01 AM:I don't know what happened but I do know that this area is usually very quiet so I wonder what got everyone all touched off. They must have been REALLY fighing big time for the people to call the police.
Thank goodness the guy did not die.
Is there any better way to handle the dogs? I can't think of what you do is a dog comes after you. What can you do? If the dog attacks you and you have a gun you shoot the dog. What else can you do? I HATE to see the dog get killed, but what do you do?
Bad Habit wrote on Oct 27, 2008 7:15 AM:Not a good idea to bring a dog to a gunfight.
2 Did anyone read the story wrote on Oct 27, 2008 7:31 AM:I guess U didn't read the story! OPD was called by neighbors because the man was FIGHTING WITH HIS FATHER! While OPD was already on their way a neighbor CLAIMS to have heard shots fired NEAR the house where the man was fighting with his father! Since when did NEAR THE HOUSE OF THE ALTERCATION have the same exact meaning as AT THE HOUSE OF THE ALTERCATION? I agree if OPD felt threatend by the dog, then as sad as it is the were right in shooting the PIT. But if that was the threat, then they should NOT have shot the UNARMED man!
But like I said~~2 DID ANYONE READ THE STORY! Maybe u need to re-read the story yourself! And turn on the TV to any local station and u will NOT ONLY realize u MISREAD the article but get the TRUE story(FROM THE NEWS)
Please Read Before Posting wrote on Oct 27, 2008 7:39 AM:I'm not saying the cop who shot was wrong (not enough info)... but the article does not say the dog attacked anyone. (Unless of course this article has been updated from a previous version that contained such details)
not amused wrote on Oct 27, 2008 7:41 AM:My earlier comment regarding murder's opinion was not posted because I suggested the poster was moronic. Yet an annonymous poster can call the police trigger happy cowboys. What is wrong with this paper and it's staff? I see an agenda, and it's not good.
To neighbor and Friend wrote on Oct 27, 2008 7:41 AM:almost like how they bash the cops for doing their job RIGHT. The cops had no choice and the suspect and media should be held accountable. The suspect for putting them in this situation and media for all the negative reporting.
TV Tainted wrote on Oct 27, 2008 8:01 AM:Several TV stations used a comment from a neighbor who stated Kwok came out of the house and shot a gun into the air, she said he has a temper when he gets mad but he wouldn't hurt anyone. She has known him for 40 years. She went on to say how she hopes they get the cops. Channel 8 news worst of all stating "neighbors outraged", biggest question if shooting was justified, they said witnesses said suspect had his hands up when shot but they didn't show that statement on video. Channel 8 didn't remain neutral in this one, some of the other channels at least had witnesses saying the police had no choice, it's funny channel 8 didn't find them to put on TV, only the side that they wanted to make its story against police, not the one that caused the police to be there in the first place. BAD REPORTING

You Dont Know wrote on Oct 27, 2008 9:16 AM:Isn't it funny how so many of us give opinions even though we have never been anywhere close to what these officers have to endure on a daily basis? You really don't know what you would do if confronted in that situation, you only "think" you do. Since everyone is giving their opinions...here is mine: "I have found throughout my life (45 yrs) the people who "bash" law enforcement are most often criminals who are angry because they broke the law, got caught, have to pay for THEIR crime, etc. I am an animal lover but if I felt my life was in danger from an animal or person, I would not hesitate to protect myself. I hope those who "bash" OPD never have a need for them, they might find out how much they are really needed." Thank you OPD! skg

About Murder wrote on Oct 27, 2008 1:01 PM:I think maybe Murder was trying to be a bit cynical regarding the craziness so many display over police dogs that are killed. They aren't police officers, killing one, even on purpose, is not murder, and no matter how personified some humans want to make them, they are still dogs.
I agree Murder didn't do a very good job, but I think the point is a good one. Should the killing of this dog be treated just like the killing of a person? Should the killing of a police dog be treated like the killing of an officer?
The answer is no to both questions.
Quiet Area wrote on Oct 27, 2008 1:05 PM:This street might be quiet, but the area is not one I would consider one of the more peaceful in Oceanside. We used to go to the kids baseball games at the park near there, and there were plenty of times it felt just a bit uncomfortable. Maybe it's changed in the last 10 years.
Dog Trainer wrote on Oct 27, 2008 1:52 PM:I have been working with dogs since I was 12 years old. I have also worked in law enforcement and the security industry. Bottom line is, no one knows what happened. To "Poor man" you must have seen WAY too many action movies with regards to shootings. It is difficult to hit someones knee or shoot someones gun out of their hand etc... Thoracic cavity shots are always trained because that is the quickest sure way to stop a threat.. Besides shooting someone in the leg knee etc would do nothing but just piss them off. Two shots to the chest and upper region are designed to shock and stop advancers. Also it may have been the most peaceful dog in the world on any other day but when there is a heated fight/argument going on the dog is going to sense the tension. You dont need a trained attack dog to attack something you just need the emotions the lack of control the confusion of course that dog is going to charge its protecting its owner.... If it did happen that way the owner of the dog should be charged for that. Also, every body can be a nice person 99% of the time it only takes once. Its amazing how much anger, drugs, alcohol can to a person, they behave in ways that are not normal or rational to them. There are consequences for all actions.
If i see pit bull charging me wrote on Oct 27, 2008 2:37 PM:I would shoot it too!
FTM wrote on Oct 27, 2008 4:13 PM:Well, when i say the area is "quiet" i mean there is hardly any violence. The area is a bit of a 'barrio', well, that's too harsh - the homes are 'blue collar', okay? The residends are "diverse" but also peaceful. I know that Vista and Oceansise gang kids go to John Landes Park there occasionaly and theat has been a bit of a trouble spot, but the residences are usually pretty peacful. I'm just miffed about the guy getting shot because over the past two years we have read story after story of Oceanside police chasing down bad guys and wrestling them, punching them, getting thier dogs after them and just about going to extreams to take down people WITHOUT using bullets! The OPD went in and got the guys the Sherrif's were gonna shoot! We were SHOCKED when that SDPD cop shot the woman and her kid in the parking lot because we were all saying: "Hey, Oceanside cops don't do that!". They did not even fire thier weapons when they were fired upon when that scumbag shot Officer Bessant. Somthing just does not sound right here - Oceanside cops are ANYTHING but trigger happy. Someone either yelled a false warning or one cop made a bad mistake or this guy must have tried to rush the police. Somthing just does not make sense here. As for the dog, If they shot the dog for no reason they should be punished. Also if any of the residents who are saying the cops went crazy are found to be lieing, they should go to jail. The main witness is still alive so we should get the story pretty soon.
To Dog Trainer wrote on Oct 27, 2008 4:49 PM:There are consequences for all actions, huh? I say yeah right, mercy triumphs over judgement. A few years ago, someone got really angry with me because I was in his opinion taking to long at a stop light. Rather than call the LEO's, I chose to let him get away.

Dog Trainer Response To Dog Trainer wrote on Oct 29, 2008 4:07 PM:Obviously you did not read my post the point is that no matter what the other poster said "poor man" or whatever it was that the dog was usually peaceful it could turn and attack at any time especially if the owner is involved in it. Which in a sense would mean the police officer would have shot the dog charging him. I have been involved in many dog attack cases and have worked with Police K 9s. So why dont you do yourself a favor and read things before you make ignorant statements...Especially since the majority of my post was about the shooting itself and about how any dog could attack someone and it was in response to another poster And nice touch on the "Dog Whisperer" and Freak Circus" statements...
