FOOD: Big Boy bounces back

TEMECULA ----Big Boy is back.

A Detroit-area company is rebuilding the restaurant chain marked in front with big plastic statues of a swirly haired boy in checkered overalls.

Big Boy Restaurants International LLC plans to open a restaurant in Temecula soon and will follow with several more in North County.

Can Big Boy lure a new generation of customers?

One restaurant analyst said his prospects are mixed.

The chain's statue and nostalgic appeal are great draws, but its standard American fare ---- including omelettes, French fries and spaghetti ---- seems dated, said Bob Goldin, an analyst with Technomic Inc., a Chicago-based food-industry consultancy. And "family restaurants" aren't drawing any more families than they did in Big Boy's 1960s heydey, Goldin said.

"It's kind of a tired segment," Goldin said. "I think it's a very, very modest growth opportunity at best."

The company's new owners say they have 72 years of history on their side. Founded as a Glendale cheeseburger stand in 1936 by Bob Wian, Big Boy eventually expanded to some 600 restaurants across the nation with the help of its namesake character, who appeared as a statue out front and as a comic-book character inside.

And several North County residents contacted this week had fond memories of the restaurant and its food.

Murrieta resident Jackie McGrew remembers eating at Bob's Big Boys ---- as they're still known on the West Coast ---- in Bell Gardens, where she grew up. The cheeseburgers were "second to none," she said.

They have been putting in this very paper you are complaining on that the matter was going to the council since 2007 and did any of you go to show your support against the sale. Of course not you were to busy doing your own thing then come sit on your computer being desktop tough guys, what a bunch of crybabies.

Love Bobs wrote on Jul 17, 2008 3:30 PM:I am so happy they are opening back up. My favorite was the brawney beef burger combo and the hot fudge brownie. I hope they have these items on the menu because it brings back memories of when I was a kid eating at the one in O'side and Vista.

Jeff wrote on Jul 17, 2008 3:44 PM:It's all about the Ice Cream Cake covered in fudge!

miranda wrote on Jul 17, 2008 3:46 PM:I can't wait for a Bob's to open! YUM! It was that combo plate that kept me coming back. Big Boy, french fries and a salad with blue cheese dressing.
I'll drive to Temecula if I have to but please put one down here around Vista.

Joe wrote on Jul 17, 2008 3:56 PM:Looking forward to them coming to San Diego Co again. It was just a week ago I tried to search them, and was disappointed that they weren't in San Diego anymore. They have good hamburgers, Spaghetti and the best salad dressing.

Yokozuna wrote on Jul 18, 2008 4:30 AM:Nostalgia City. I grew up in Glendale and Bob's was the hang out. Bob Wian's son was in my older brother's high school class. The Drive In was the cruise place and the Big Boy Hamburger 35 cents. First place I ever tried dipping french fries (ordered extra crisp)in thousand island dressing. When we moved to North County there was a Bob's in San Marcos?.

Spots wrote on Jul 18, 2008 7:16 AM:Can't wait to take my kids! I grew up going to Bob's on Balboa Ave.... My dad took us there all the time loved sitting at the counter the grilled cheese and chocolate milk shake!!

Went to Bobs in the late s in Placentia every Friday wrote on Jul 18, 2008 9:10 AM:night with freinds. I remember cherry-lime rickeys and chili spaghetti (can't get away with that now...). Will definately bring my kids there...

San Marcos Bobs wrote on Jul 18, 2008 9:32 AM:Don't get too excited, people! There was a Bob's Big Boy restaurant in San Marcos not too long ago and it sucked! It was nothing like the Bob's I remember from my days growing up in Whittier.

Yes Sarah wrote on Jul 18, 2008 11:09 AM:I am right there with you, Sister! A Farrell's would be awesome. Talk about a cool place to take your kids!!

Sarah wrote on Jul 18, 2008 11:36 AM:There is still a Farrell's in Santa Clarita (the only one in contiguous U.S.). I'm thinking of taking a roadtrip up there for Thanksgiving with the family and hitting Magic Mountain too. They're only about 10 minutes from each other.

Back East wrote on Jul 18, 2008 1:09 PM:Back east (Pennsylvania, specifically) these restaurants are called "Eat n'Park", and have been going strong since the 50s. You can go to one today, and have the same menu as when the place first opened. Good stuff, except don't tell your doc.

Good luck to Bobs wrote on Jul 18, 2008 3:25 PM:Since our family has always enjoyed Bob's Big Boy, I hav been following the comeback with interest. What I find strange is that there are now 3 different stories about the same comeback. The first is still linked to my bookmark and has 25 comments (from the Californian section), the amended version of that story (the original was a lot better) with its comments, and finally the NCT Bounces Back story, which is brief and has entirely different comments. I wonder if anyone else has noticed ? Remember those small salads that were chopped up and came with the Big Boy Combo ?

Phil wrote on Jul 18, 2008 4:30 PM:I probably owe much of my high LDL cholesterol to the junk food that Bob's used to serve! Let's see their nutritional information before we start to celebrate. Or are we in a hurry to poison our families for the sake of reliving a few good memories?!

Alf wrote on Jul 18, 2008 5:17 PM:Well, "Yokozuna" at 4:30AM, my favorite junk food is tater tots sprinkled with seasoned salt covered with 1000 island dressing. I tell my doctor and he rolls his eyes in disgust at my evil ways. BP is 120/75 but LDL is too high. Oh, well. If life is short, eat dessert first! Regards, Alf.
