Smith hears voices of fans

GM just as unhappy with team's play | ∞
SAN DIEGO -- If Chargers fans wonder if general manager A.J. Smith is listening to them voice their frustration with choice words and raucous booing and chanting the first name of former coach Marty Schottenheimer, the answer is a resounding yes.
Smith hears the fans loud and clear. He acknowledges that fans should be expressing frustration with the team's 1-3 record and a losing streak that reached three games with Sunday's 30-16 home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
"That's the passion of the fans," Smith said Monday in response to the earsplitting chants of "Marrrty" that bellowed loudly late in the fourth quarter. "That's the way they are. It's never going to change.
"They'll ask for your firing if things aren't going well and then they'll be the same ones that will be lining the streets throwing confetti at the parade. They'll be happy for you then."
The Chargers currently don't look like they will need to order confetti for any postseason celebrations based on their standing at the quarter pole of the NFL season. A team forecasted to be a leading Super Bowl contender has instead been a monumental flop and resides in last place in the less-than-ferocious AFC West.
The fans aren't happy with the product and neither is Smith.
"I'm extremely disappointed that we're not sharp and we're not playing well," Smith said. "We're all looking for answers in the building -- the coaches, the players. There's no question about that.
"But it's a long hard season and there's a long way to go."
A primary reason why Schottenheimer is no longer coach of the Chargers is because of the icy relationship he and Smith shared. By chanting the first name of the former coach, fans were expressing that they aren't happy with the efforts of new coach Norv Turner, whose career record fell to 59-85-1 after Sunday's loss.
"I understand the responsibilities of the job I have," Turner said Monday. "I'm ultimately the one who's responsible. So it's my job to get the things done we're talking about. The inconsistencies, the problems we're having with turnovers, giving up big plays (on defense). I've got to get those things eliminated."
It's the inconsistency that has been particularly maddening over the first four games. The Chargers will play well for a while -- they were highly dominant in building a 10-0 first-quarter lead against the Chiefs -- and later hit a stretch of mistakes.
Sometimes a poor play occurs right after an impressive one. An example of that occurred Sunday when the Chiefs scored the winning points on a 51-yard pass play on third-and-19. The touchdown came immediately after linebacker Shawne Merriman revved up Qualcomm Stadium with a punishing sack followed by the popular "Lights Out" sack dance.
The ups and downs frustrate the executive who built the Chargers from a league doormat into a division-winning squad.
"We have to come together," Smith said. "We're too inconsistent. We're playing well in spurts and that's not good enough. If you play in spurts, it's going to get you in trouble or disaster.
"We're 1-3, we're at the bottom of the division. There's a lot of football yet to be played and that's good. There's a lot of time left and that's good. But eventually you're going to run out of time.
"We need to get our act together and get it together very quickly."
Getting it together and ending their losing skid this Sunday could be difficult. The Chargers visit the Denver Broncos and the Mile High City has traditionally been a place where they experience Mile High lows.
When the Chargers won in Denver last season, it was only their fourth win in Denver in the past 24 visits.
The last time they won back-to-back games in Denver was 1967-68 during the days of the American Football League.
On the positive side, the Chargers remain just one game out of first place as the Broncos, Chiefs and Oakland Raiders all have 2-2 records. If they were in any other NFL division, they would either be two or three games behind the leader.
"The only good thing is when I'm looking up at the division, I don't see a team 4-0 and I don't see another one 3-1," Smith said. "I'm looking up and seeing 2-and-2, 2-and-2, 2-and-2 and then the Chargers. So that's a good thing.
"But what are we going to do about that? We're in a hole. We need to get out of it. We need to fight out of it and we're on our way to Denver."
Key players continue to have difficult explaining the early-season struggles.
Running back LaDainian Tomlinson said players and coaches alike have to accept the blame and that everybody has to be careful to avoid finger-pointing.
Quarterback Philip Rivers pointed out that three quarters of the season remains: "They don't give a prize for who won the first quarter (of the season). They give a prize at the end."
Linebacker Shaun Phillips said the players are at fault for the 1-3 start, not Turner and the coaching staff.
"We personally don't like to attribute it to the coaching staff because we hold ourselves to such high standards as players and professional athletes," Phillips said. "We understand that the coaches, at the end of the day, do not take a snap. It's all about us, and we bear that burden. We've just got to concentrate on getting better.
"I just hate the fact that Norv has to take the scrutiny, and it's not his fault. Coach Turner, he's the head man and he runs the show, but bottom line, we take every snap. Norv ain't never had a chance to throw a fourth-down pass or cover somebody on fourth down in the NFL. So it's all about us, and we need to hold ourselves accountable."
One thing the Chargers learned Sunday is that the paying customers will hold them accountable if they continue to sputter and underachieve.
"The voice of the fan is to be heard loud and clear," Smith said. "They will cheer with you when you're on top and they'll kick you in the pants when you're down. That's the way it should be. They have a perfect right to do that."

Charger Fan wrote on Oct 2, 2007 2:25 AM:I disagree the players are not to blame. The play calling this year "Sucks!" Even worse then Marty's "Prevent the Win" play calls. I could give many examples, we need 3 yrds for a 1st and they call a deep pass, we need 10 yrds and they call for LT on a slant to the side yrd line for 3 yrds. In the New England game we are getting rushed really bad and they call for 3 drop back passes which result in sacks. A quick slant or a run would have at least slowed the rush. I am no football coach but I can make better play calls then what is coming out of this coaching staff. Don't bring Marty back but dump all of the coaches and start over. Heck High School coaches would do better.-
Fan Maybe wrote on Oct 2, 2007 5:01 AM:Yak, Yak, Yak, that is all this artricle has to say. It doesn't address any of the issues or make any statements about what needs to be done. Smith is talking like the Fans are a bunch of misfits, when in fact, it is him and his HAND chosen staff that are the misfits. When it comes down to having a 3-1 record it could very easily been 0-4, if they hadn't pulled the LT pass to Gates play on Chicago. Mr. Spanos needs to pay attention here because AJ won't be able to blame the fans for not standing by this team when the Chargers record gets really bad.-

Zack wrote on Oct 2, 2007 7:45 AM:The players are absolutely the ones to blame. They didn't get it done last year and it cost Marty his job. They aren't getting it done now and it could very well cause the current coaches their jobs. This is a soft team full of soft players getting paid huge salaries for being under achievers. The players can talk a good game, too bad that can't play one. I hope these guys are studying the play book 24/7, because with this current disaster of a team, they have no business going out for a good time if they can't get it done on the field. I have been a Charger fan for several decades and I can't remember a Charger team that has talked so much off the field without performing on the field. This team is an absolute embarrassment. They have no heart and no soul, they are just soft. They need to grow a backbone. Perhaps in Denver the players can dress up in cheerleader uniforms and the cheerleaders can dress up as players and play the game. The cheerleaders can't play any worse.-

Zack wrote on Oct 2, 2007 8:34 AM:Unless the fans start holding the players accountable for this teams poor play, nothing will change. Why should anything change if a player can mail it in week after week and still get fan support as the fans only voice their frustration to the front office about management issues and at the same time a player gets a huge pay check avoiding all responsibility for this teams failure? Why aren't the fans holding the players responsible for any role in their poor play? How many players have left the Charger team only to play a lot better for another franchise? Blame ownership all you want. Blame AJ all you want. I remember the draft of Ryan Leaf and some of the poor drafts and trades prior to that. Unless you have a better GM in mind to take AJ's place, then I suggest fans ought to place their blame for this teams failure where it belongs, that is with the players. I am not saying this coaching staff has been perfect and yes this coaching staff wouldn't be my first choice of hire, but you can't let the players off the hook. That all being said. At some point in time, the team needs to find out if they are just drafting wide receivers with poor receiving skills or do they need to replace Lofton and bring in a new receivers coach. ARe they drafting poorly in the secondary, is it a coaching problem or are those players just mailing it in?-
GG wrote on Oct 2, 2007 8:40 AM:Zack, I agree with all you said. However, the reason there are coaches in the NFL is to correct all those errors on the part of the players. The NFL coaches don't tach how-to-play- football. These guys know that. The coaches' jobs are to bring out the best in the players and as we've seen for three weeks in a row, they're not doing that. The coaches are failing the team. Who would have guessed.-
Oceansider wrote on Oct 2, 2007 8:44 AM:AJSmith is saying, in so many words, since you fans are fickle, bandwagon jumpers, NOT THAT THERE'S ANYTHING WRONG WITH THAT, they have no credibility or insight and can just go pound sand -- as long as they keep paying for the right to be fickle, bandwagon jumpers by buying up tickets. Chargers have been, are now, and always will be a second-rate bush league team with the Spanos family at the helm. Send them a message they'll really hear: send 'em back your tickets and refuse to watch the games. Otherwise, Spanos is crying all the way to the bank.-
Zack wrote on Oct 2, 2007 8:55 AM:Yes, I have been a Charger fan for several decades and it has been very frustrating. NO, I don't mince words about this. Being a Charger fan is a very difficult thing. I have watched this team long enough to know that it is not a matter of if this team will fail, but when this team will fail. As long as they have been in the NFL,IMO this team has always faltered and always underachieved. I knew they would lose to the Patriots last year in the playoffs and I knew they would have that losing mentality going into this season. It would have happened with or without Marty.-
Zack wrote on Oct 2, 2007 9:03 AM:I agree. I understand that coaches are there to correct the mistakes that the players are making. The problem is that the players seem to be making the same mistakes over and over and over again. No way should any secondary be beat with the same slant pattern two weeks in a row. That shouldn't happen and a coach can try to correct that mistake, but it is the responsibility of the players to make those corrections on the field. Is the poor tackling a coaching technique issue, or a lack of preparation by the players? Given that the secondary has stunk for years and years, I am more inclined to believe it is a player issue.-
Joe wrote on Oct 2, 2007 9:24 AM:I would prefer OJ Smith's deafening silence about the LOSERS HE SELECTED to coach this team than the spewing of crap I just read above from him. If we lose to Denver the chant should change from Maarrty to FIRE AJ FIRE AJ. Yes OJ Smith brought us some (supposedly) good players but he also brought us Sammy "Toast" Davis as a 1st round bust and THIS ATROCIOUS SECONDARY (anyone remember "Cough Syrup" Terrence Keil-thanks OJ Smith) so it's not like he is perfect even at what he does best which is drafting young players. It was MARTY who DEVELOPED them and took them to 14-2. Where he really blew it is by being so ArrogantJ as to think his picks were so good that he did not need to bring in a couple of specific free agents (like the Pats did which put them in an eliet class we can only dream about at this point) to shore up our exposed and pathetic secondary. Never in the history of the NFL has a safety allowed 2 slants to go for 50 yard touchdowns in back to back games. START WEDDLE NOW!!! Denver has lost 2 in a row also and really need a win so this will be a very tough game in Denver but if the Chargers expect to turn around their season it MUST start now! It's a shame they lost to 2 teams they should have beaten but we can just chalk them up to "wrinkles in their continuity". Now they will have to win at least 9 or 10 more games to make the playoffs and if they keep stinking like they have that won't happen. Talk about a Ferari running like a YUGO! C'mon Chargers-Get 'r done!-

Your managing decisions have been a failure and the only comments you should be making is what are you going to do to fix the problems and explain to your Charger customers your plan; not excuses and euphemisms. Players, your credentials obviously have been significantly exagerated and the accolades got to your heads. With the exception of LT and Merriman, the rest of you are average, at best. It's time to forget that you were a 14-2 team -- that was last year. What have you done for us this year; lose. You are a 1-3 team, with the one win at home against a losing team. Hence, you are losers. Get over last year. Mr. Spanos, keep Norv; fire Smith. Norv, show some leadership and fire your buddy, the defensive coach (it's a mistake to hire incompetent friends) and start looking for some good offensive linemen (USC's line would be a vast improvement over the current starters).-

Need Players wrote on Oct 2, 2007 9:53 AM:There is an easy solution to the Chargers problems. Players need to make the plays. Jackson needs to catch the ball, Rivers needs to see LT wide open in the flat, the secondary needs to cover someone and most of all, the defense needs to tackle. High school teams tackle better than the Chargers do right now. I'm sorry, bumping and pushing may have gotten the player down in college but this is the NFL. These guys need to wrap up and tackle. Rivers needs some help right now. Start throwing quick 5 yard slants on 1st down to get the D off the line. This worked very well for Montana & Rice. Perhaps someone on the Chargers coaching staff has heard of them. I would love to see Sproles take off on one of those. Start taking what the D gives you instead of always trying for the big play. The defense sucking right now has a lot to do with leadership. Where's Donnie or Junior when you need them? Someone there needs to take charge and kick some guys in the butt. They should be ashamed to call themselves Professionals. They need to change their attitude if they are ever going to stop someone. I don't put all the problems on the coaches, they don't play the game. However, they do have the responsibility to call the right plays. Give the pig to LT and block for him. Easy fix there. Nuff said-

Nice Move Dean.......I'm sure Daddy is very proud of you Deano! This new coaching staff is incompetent, blind and seems to be in more disarray then the players they teach. If Turner is such an offensive guru, then why is Rivers going backwards? Why is it that the Oline has forgotten how to protect the QB and block for LT? Where are the contributions from Jackson, Floyd & Davis? No pass rush, except for Jamal! The linebackers have gone from outstanding to possible non-existent entities. The Chargers had a winning season under their belts when AJ Smith was promoted to replace John Butler. I sense AJ Smith was not entirely responsible for the talent the Chargers have drafted. I understand one of the Charger scouts discovered Antonio Gates talent before anyone else had. AJ Smith is responsible for the following errors: 1)trading quarterback Cleo Lemon to the Dolphins a few weeks before the Chargers played them, the Chargers lost that game "it was as if they new the Charger play book". Marty went ballistic on that one and thus the feud started. 2) punishing hold out Antonio Gates by suspending him one game. That game was another loss for the Chargers...and cost us the playoffs. Marty is gone and the Spanos keep repeating their errors...remember the firing of Bobby Ross and their siding with GM Beathard...oh let us not forget they also drove Don Coryell out of town by giving him an assistant head coach that was a bust. Chargers can do what the Redskins did mid season when they realized they made a mistake in hiring Norv Turner and let him go. Marty Schottenheimer is not coming back. Bill Cowher is a disciple of Marty's and out respect for his mentor will decline the head coaching job if its offered. Mike Martz was available and knows the Charger offense...he learned it under Ernie Zampese who also taught it to Norv Turner...he also has a winning record...but he is the offensive coordinator in Detroit. For the moment I am losing interest in the Chargers. Its hard to believe this is the same team that was favored to win the Super Bowl last year.

This team is filled with talented players, but in order to bring out that talent you first must "MOTIVATE" them to play thier best. With that you you can mould them into the player you need them to be. With respect to Norv, I would be less worried about him than about Ted Cottrell, remember what "BILLS" stands for "BOY I LOVE LOOSING SUPERBOWLS", how many years was he the head of the defence that lost, how many superbowls? Norv needs to shake the rust off and get to it. The right play calls is key to any situation, as someone eluded to earlier, and Norv has the potential to do just that. First, though, he has to look at the potential weapons he has on offence. Of course Lt, Rivers, Gates, Neal, Jackson (yes I said Jackson) Floyd (yes I said Floyd) Davis (YES I SAID DAVIS, WITH SOME GROOMING OF COURSE) AND UHH WHO IS THAT OTHER GUY, MIC..MIKE..UUUH MICHAEL TURNER. Bring Turner in at RB, put LT in the Slot, Antonio Split out, with any of the other three at the other wide out, and mix up having a TE, FB, and another wide out, then Run-Pass do what you want and switch LT and Turner up in the back field as well. We have this guy for at least one more before he goes on and starts in the back field for another team, year use him for what he is "A WEAPON". With all of those guys on the field in the right situations who does our opponent pick to defend the tightest? This will open up the run game, Turner runs harder, than most and has speed, he has proven this to us all time and time again, he can catch as well. This type of line up can lead to a lot of one leter in the alphebet, "WWWWWWWWWWWW" If the cards are played right. "WHAT EVER IT TAKES TO WIN"

No I am not dellusional, nor am I a fanatic! I just know a thing or two about change and it takes time. If they don't get back to above .500 aFTER THE RAIDER GAME THE SEASON WILL BE LOST! BUT HAVE FAITH BOLT FANS! I TOO HAVE SEEN DARREN GORDEN GO TO DENVER AND LEAD THE LEAUGE IN PUNT RETURNS, LETTING THE HEART AND SOUL RESPECTIVLY SEAU & HARRISON WALK, THE DRAFTING OF LEAF, AND THE DAVID BOSTON EXP! However, I am a Charger Fan! Not a GM Fan or an Owner Fan a Charger Fan and I beleive these guys will get it done and finish strong. One last thing.......... this stands out to me as I remember hearing that the defense had been working on drills to strip the ball to create turnovers! I am sur that has somthing to do with our tackling problem as you have to go for the man and not the ball! That is not a gamble that should be taken across the middle with no help aginst a large WR! Just a thought! Go Bolts! When we beat Denver I will be back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As we like to place blame in our society! Thats cool just note that there has not been a team who got rid of a coach mid season and went deep into the playoffs! Let Norm finish the year and then decide how you feel about this team!
Bill wrote on Oct 2, 2007 11:22 PM:Well it's quit obvious, Marty lost 2 games last year and he got the boot, Norv has already lost 3, time to pack your bags, and take AJ with you. The losing starts at the top and trickles down. Get rid of the cause, of this demise, and the cure will follow. Keep playing hard Chargers, I'll still be rooting for you.
Retxed wrote on Oct 3, 2007 7:08 AM:First off LT needs to shut-up and run the ball. No comment TO THE PRESS from everyone would be better then the crap I hear and read. Lt grow... up quit crying and take losing like a man. PR same goes goes for you, but at least you don't spout off each lost with a underlining message that your greater then the whole and the whole freaking mess is the coaches and other players fault. Where is the ... leadership now guys, anyone can prosper in good times, now it is time for the true charactor of this team to SURFACE, " TOUGH MEN LAST, TOUGH TIMES NEVER DO". LT quit crying and being selfish and generally acting like a spoiled brat kid who was promised the golden ring just by showing up. LT if you ain't gonna lead, get... out of the way shut up and go pout in your house! PR so far your interviews are handled with class, but your on field behavoir is getting worn thin. Defense, Shawn flip burgers or anything, Cots, rush shawn every down. YOU secondary... better pull your freaking heads out of your butts cause the front isn't going sack a Mr. potato head to save you this year. GM give the coach one job, call the plays or run the team AND DO YOUR JOB LIKE TELLING THE COACH TO run the ball or pass instead of remaining silent for fear of? YOUR THE GUY IN FREAKING CHARGE IF YOUR COACH IS MESSING UP TELL HIM WHAT THE HELL YOU PLAN TO DO AND DAMN NAGIT DO IT, USE SOME OF YOUR LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND QUIT SHIRKING BY HIDING FROM YOUR OTHER RESPONSIBILITYS! WTF, You all better start acting like your a team, I see a bunch of individuals, starting with the SUPERSTARS!-

Then his EGO does in a 14 and 2 coach and staff. Then he hires puppit norv who could not motivate a group of girl scouts.Next he brings in "his buddy" Teddy who could not run a bed & breakfast and destroyed this defence in about 4 games.. By the way did any one here of a pass rush because we can't stop the pass we sure as hell better get to the QB first.Maybe we should just rush everybody and hope for the best because the secondary is non exsistent anyway. Then smith sits on his butt and does nothing to address our poor secondary/ linebacker/wide riecever woes. This team lacks leadership, direction and team unity.AJ you could have had class egos always come down to self destruction in time.Enough is enough .Bring on Pete Carrol asap-

I do not know what made A.J. think that Norv was all of a sudden become a genius and run a winning team. If the friction between A.J. and Marty was the reason Marty had to go, then maybe it should have been the other way around. A.J. has been a joke as a GM and it is time to show him the door. Once we get a GM that knows how to run a winning team, we will start getting coaches and players who can play winning football. Until then we are going to keep re-living the past over and over. A.J. MUST GO....
Joe wrote on Oct 3, 2007 8:59 PM:No great coach such as Bill Cowher, Bill Parcells etc. will want, or need, to come here with MR. EGOMANIAC in charge so he will have to GO before we can get a REAL coach. One intersting name has been circulated which is Mike Martz who lives in San Diego. I would have him in the wings and ready to step in at the bye if we don't win CONVINCINGLY the next 2 games. Promote Ron Rivera to Defensive Coordinator and send Cottrell back to the league office to push some more papers. Marty must be the smartest guy on the planet to be getting paid 4 MILLION $ to play golf and be with his beloved grandchildren. ENJOY it Marty 'cause you earned it putting up with such a pompous GM.
AT wrote on Oct 4, 2007 1:24 AM:You know why we fluctuate so much? It is because we don't have stability. When have we ever had a player that stayed here constantly and is going to retire as a Charger? You know why New England is winning Super Bowls? That is because they are picking up the veteran players we throw out. They got Seau, Harrison, Caldwell. We threw out Donnie Edwards who was our number one defensive player. AJ, why don't you look at New England a tiny bit and see that your way is TOTALLY backward. Quit it with your stubborn way of throwing away good players and coaches and we may actually get progress that isn't wasted the next year.-
