SAN DIEGO ---- Four Perris High School seniors killed in a crash on Interstate 15 in Escondido while heading to a Mission Beach outing in May were under the influence of marijuana or alcohol at the time of the accident, according to the county medical examiner's office.
The results of the toxicology tests involving the teens were reported Wednesday by The Press-Enterprise of Riverside.
Three of the students died May 30 when the 1993 Acura Integra they were in flipped over and struck a tree on the side of southbound I-15 immediately north of the ramp to Highway 78, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The impact shot the car some 20 feet off the roadway, killing three of the boys on impact. The fourth boy was taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, where he died the following day of his injuries.
Highway Patrol authorities said the car was traveling at 90 mph or faster and possibly racing another car before the crash.
Highway Patrol Officer Eric Newburg said investigators concluded that speed and driving under the influence of marijuana were the primary factors in the crash.
San Diego County medical examiner's toxicology reports showed that driver Javier Aguayo, 17, had recently used marijuana but that no alcohol was detected.
Passenger Pablo Hernan Ruiz, 18, had recently used marijuana and his blood-alcohol level was 0.08, the medical examiner's office said. Passengers Anthony Cash O'Neil, 17, and Jose Julian Espinoza, 18, had also recently used marijuana, and Espinoza had a blood alcohol level of 0.057, the coroner's report said.
The legal blood alcohol content in the state is 0.08.

Tony wrote on Jul 27, 2007 9:02 AM:Read the article: the tests only show that they had smoked Cannabis in the last 30 days and that the driver was not drinking. This is really about kids driving too fast and loosing control of the car. Obviously tragic, but not simply about "pot & alcohol"

a sad day for all but... wrote on Jul 27, 2007 11:00 AM:in this case I am sure these teens were very much aware of the consequences of smoking pot & drinking alcohol, but chose to do so anyway, afterall, that is probably why they wouldn't ride the bus with the rest of the seniors. Anyone & everyone who indulges into things that they shouldn't are aware of the ramifications caused when done imporperly. I am sure their parents had taught them not to drink & drive, not to do drugs, & most importantly to respect the lives of others by not endangering their own life, as well as, the lives of others by doing these things while under the influence of either drugs or alcohol, but at this age, we all know that kids know more than any adult & unfortunately they often times must suffer the consequences of their actions by loss of life. It is very sad indeed as all of these young men had a lifetime ahead of them, however, they themselves did make the choices they made & in doing so created a memory for their fellow seniors that will last a lifetime, just not with their presence. I hope & pray that others have learned from their unfortunate disrespect for life, just how precious life truly is. My heart goes out to all the families & friends involved, as it tends to hurt us more than those who actually lost their life, survivors always suffer the most cause we are the ones left behind to remember, the good, the bad, & the questionable actions of these young men. If one finds themselves in a sitation that the partying is more important than the activity at hand, please stay home to do the partying, it just may save your life, as well as, that of a friend. RIP, to all four of these young men...God bless your sweet souls!!!

People must understand that if they choose to partake of that type of lifestyle, that the must consider the lives of others and themselves before ever getting behind the wheel. However, it doesn't sound to me like the driver was probably that impaired, but he was probably showing-off for the other car and his friends. Perhaps the passengers were even egging him on to drive recklessly. Sometimes stupid youthful mistakes can be the most life altering of all!! Sad...Sad...Sad, all the way around!!
Tragic no matter what! wrote on Jul 27, 2007 11:54 AM:Four dead kids, due to pot, alcohol, racing, whatever the case is, FOUR ARE STILL DEAD. As the song goes...Parents..teach your children well....

Sad story about these 4 boys. I am sure all the parents were kind, loving and caring. Their kids just got sidetracked and will never be able to take the mistake back.I am so sorry for tou loss, God Bless the families!!

JB wrote on Jul 30, 2007 1:43 PM:To all those marijuana legalizers that say no one ever died from smoking marijuana, well here four young men who did. Also to all our lawmakers, take away driving priviledges to every individual who is a medical marijuana patient, because they put all of us at risk. If your so called recomendation states you should smoke one or more joints a day the individual will never be sober enough to drive.
Fernando wrote on Aug 18, 2007 7:06 PM:I think you guys are just a bunch of judgemental, unsensitive, know-it-all people!!! These 4 kids that you say were irresponsible and not thoughtful to others were and will always be my best friends! my opinion about all of you is that if you dont know the people and what really did happen you shouldn't even think about posting a comment...you think that they were unconsiderate reckless teenagers, but they werent! i feel honered to have the oportunity to be as close as them as i was...i mean i was with these group of kids in and out of school, so i know they way they were...very respectful and caring about others...so i would appreciate it if you would keep ur opinions to yourself and let the four R.I.P instead of judging them for what heppened...i will always love them and it kills me to go to the cemetary and see the graves of my brothers...i was suppose to be in that car with them...but i decided to go on the bus...God lead me away from the terrible accident but i cant help thinking why he couldnt have lead them away...RIP My Boys and you will never be forgotten!!! Put that on the "P"!!!!
