OCEANSIDE ---- July typically inspires thoughts of the beach and summer fun, but the month meant holiday shopping for thousands of people who attended Old Mission Montessori School's Christmas in July on Saturday.

An annual shopping extravaganza, Christmas in July draws an estimated 20,000 people each year. Offering handmade arts and craft items, the event continues from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside.

Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the event includes a rummage sale, bake sale, beer garden, food court, raffle, kid's activity area and live entertainment.

"You name it, there's everything from food to jewelry," said Melissa Gillespie, spokeswoman for the school.

Organized by parents of children at the school, the event is the school's largest fundraiser, raising approximately $80,000, Gillespie said.

Beneath the trees on the Mission grounds, attendees enjoyed shade and a slight breeze as they perused the vendors' booths.

"I like the handmade crafts and being able to talk to the people who design and craft their (goods)," said Heather Newman of Carlsbad.

Newman, who attends the event every year with her daughters, said the main attraction this year was the jewelry and Christmas decorations for sale.

"You can't beat the weather in Southern California and it's time to spend with my two daughters," Newman said.

With more than 175 vendors selling unique arts and crafts items including wreathes, candles, potpourri, ceramic tiles, clothing and gourds, there was something for everyone at this year's event.

A 10-year veteran of the sale, Dave and Sandy Kirkman of Oceanside sold woodwork at their booth.

"We do very well (at this event)," Sandy Kirkman said. "There's a good crowd, a lot of shoppers (and) the weather is nice this time of year."

The couple's wares included cutting boards, bowls and furniture made from local and recycled wood.

"These are all one-of-a-kind pieces," she said.

At Sister Gladys' rummage sale, Jaime Mautz of San Diego looked on as her children picked through toys and games.

"The kids like to look around the garage sale for some treasures," Mautz said.

Drawn to the dolls and stuffed animals, Mautz's daughter, Peyton, 2 years old, found a doll stroller and a pink children's laptop computer.

"It's a fun summer activity, just a really nice summer destination," Mautz said.

The event continues from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at 4070 Mission Ave. in Oceanside. Admission is free but a $2 parking donation is requested. For more information call (760) 757-3232.
