Democrats see county turning blue

SAN DIEGO ---- The location of the state Democratic party convention, which was held in San Diego over the weekend, was a sign of the region's changing political landscape, North County Democrats said.

When asked what attracted the party's state convention to San Diego for the first time, some Democrats pointed to an improved political machine, others to a growing number of registered Democrats in the San Diego area and others to Encinitas Democrat Francine Busby's spirited yet unsuccessful campaign for the 50th Congressional District seat.
But they all agreed that the convention would be a boost for local party members.
"I have had people come up to me who said they've been invigorated by the convention and now they want to get active," said Phil Hanneman, an Oceanside resident who serves as a regional director for the party.
In recent years, local party leaders formed a group called North County Democratic Unity, a coalition of Democratic clubs which helps organize fundraisers and helps candidates run campaigns. Its functions have attracted statewide leaders as guest speakers, including former Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante and state chairman Art Torres.
Torres said he has taken notice and wanted to help increase the party's influence in the San Diego region.
"We're looking at increasing the numbers across the board," Torres said a press conference last week.
San Diego County has long been considered a Republican stronghold, especially in North County, where there are no elected Democrats serving in state or federal office.
There are about 527,000 registered Republicans to 454,000 Democrats in the county, according to the county Registrar of Voters. But some party leaders say the demographics of the region are changing in Democrats' favor.
"If San Diego County were a state, we would rank 21 in the country for registered Democrats," said Jake Edmondson, an Escondido resident and vice chairman of North County Democratic Unity.
The county's growing Latino population, traditionally considered a Democratic constituency, represents an opportunity for the party to expand, Edmondson said Sunday on the floor of the convention shortly after listening to presidential candidates John Edwards, a former senator from North Carolina, and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.
Democrats also credited Busby's campaign with attracting nationwide attention and strengthening the party machine in the county through her efforts. She lost her bid to fill the seat vacated by former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Escondido, who was convicted of bribery and is serving a prison sentence.
Republicans, on the other hand, say Democrats are losing ground in the county, not gaining.
In a recent column published in the North County Times, state Republican Party chairman Ron Nehring pointed to several losing elections for Democrats in the county, including mayoral elections in San Diego and Chula Vista.
"There are many good reasons for the Democrats to be in San Diego ---- showcasing a model for victory just doesn't happen to be one of them," Nehring said, referring to the convention.
Xavier Martinez, a longtime Democratic party activist in North County and one of the architects of North County Democratic Unity, said he sees the county differently.
"Registration has changed in San Diego, and in North County registration is changing," Martinez said. "In North County, we see people moving up there who are progressive and are more in line with the values of the Democratic party."

Rob wrote on Apr 29, 2007 10:28 PM:Now there's an oxymoron Mr. Martinez, 'values of the Democratic party'. Francine Busby did certainly do alot of pandering to all the Latinos to try and get them to vote for her, didn't she? Do all the democrats in this county side with Harry Reid and all the dems in the House and Senate who want this Country to lose the war just so they can win elections? They are despicable and are doing more harm to our Country than any terrorist ever can!
Concerned wrote on Apr 30, 2007 12:59 AM:I think Martinez has cracked. North County is still dominated by hard working middle and upper middle class persons with clean family values. Many of us have re-registered without preference to protest President Bush’s position on illegal immigration. That doesn’t mean we will vote for a socialist democrat. And don’t assume that Latinos will vote for a lying, psychotic socialist candidate such as Hilary. I suspect a portion of the registered Dems in San Diego are illegal, I doubt any are registered Republicans. Obama is interesting but he doesn’t have a chance against Hilary’s hate machine. Besides, he sounds too much like a Republican. What does a Democrat offer? Just take a look at Davis's and Filner's districts racked with crime, drugs, perversion, poverty, and despaired. If that’s what you want in North County then vote Democrat.

As for illegal immigration, I will be voting for the candidate that has the guts to get rid of illegal aliens and force them to enter by our laws. I am tired of my taxes being used to provide free public services (emergency rooms, schools, welfare, college tuition, etc) to illegals while I have to pay out of pocket to get these services. The Katrina victims would be in their own homes by now had we spent the money on them instead of illegals. America needs to take care of Americans first, just like a sick person needs to be healthy before he can help others. Socialism is not for America yet both parties practice it.

Kim wrote on Apr 30, 2007 7:52 AM:Actually Oceanside has increased in republican registration. Previously, the city had more democrats. Certainly the trend is republican. All one has to do is look at the city council make-up. With Sanchez, a democrat, openly supporting republicans (ala $ 4k donation to Wood) combined with the new republican registration in the new housing areas, the city has gone majority republican. This trend will continue. The overall socio-economic status of San Diego county does not presage any increase in democrats' registration. Quite the opposite.

It was exciting, invigorating and meaningful. Every one of the candidates who spoke were more intelligent, articulate, knowledgeable and caring for the working people of this Country than George, the decider,Bush could ever hope to be. The Republican President Bush was in league with Vicente Fox for open borders. The largest invasion of illegals in my lifetime happened with Bush's help. I appeal to our Democratic leaders not to follow in Bush's path of illegals over Citizens. Secure the border, uphold the laws on the books. Let the Border Patrol do their job which is catch and deport illegal lawbreakers. No Amnesty and no freebies. Also huge fines for illegal employers and slum landlords. Take away the tax exempt status for churches who are helping lawbreakers Oh yes, and when you deport illegal families that includes their children. Most of us take our kids with us when we move.

Meanwhile, the "reddist" cities in San Diego County, Escondido and Vista, from the sound of their whining denizens here on the NCT comments sections are already "crap hole ghettos" while Del Mar (my neighborhood)and other "blue" cities and towns along the coast enjoy the lowest crime rates in the county. Some people just never learn, and just continue to vote against their interests, while their brains-turned sponges just soak up the latest lies and phony talking points from the right-wing propaganda-spewing Faux News outlets and hate-radio shock jockeys.

WOW!! wrote on Apr 30, 2007 7:48 PM:There are sure a lot of poor losers out there. The right wing neocons just can't admit that Bush is a dismal failure. The Iraq war, the invasion of illegal aliens, the outsourcing of good American jobs, the illegals lowering wages for our Citizens. Bush ignored the warning that Osama was about to attack, He was busy on vacation. He sat like a dunce for seven minutes when informed we had been hit. They waited to attack until they got the most ignorant man in office. George Bush did exactly what Osama wanted, he attacked Iraq.
