Victim's family seeks answers after fatal crash

SOLANA BEACH -- The family of Ryan Goodall is seeking answers to what caused a collision that killed the young Encinitas man last week.
Goodall, who would have turned 29 last Saturday, was headed south on Highway 101 the afternoon of March 11 when his motorcycle collided with a second vehicle, which was pulling out of the driveway of Frogs Fitness Center on the 500 block of the highway, authorities said.
Despite efforts by paramedics, Goodall was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver, 85-year-old Jack Beim of Del Mar, was uninjured and his vehicle sustained minor damage.
Goodall's family members said they had some concerns about the factors that contributed to the crash and don't want people to assume he is at fault, his brother-in-law Lance Hetherington said.
Doug Allen, traffic investigator for the Encinitas sheriff's department, said Monday that an investigation is continuing and neither driver has been determined to be at fault.
Allen was mum on details of the ongoing investigation, but said the "movements (Beim) made as far as pulling out and making a left turn ... are both legal maneuvers."
The area where the crash occurred is also not known for a high number of traffic accidents, and overall Solana Beach has a low collision rate, he said.
Investigations, which can include diagrams and reconstruction of the crash, can take the "better part of the month" to complete, Allen said.
Hetherington, also of Encinitas, said finding out what caused the crash is something Goodall would have wanted his family to do.
He remembered his Goodall as a warm, generous person who was "always doing stuff for other people," such as cooking dinner for 30 friends just because he enjoyed being with them.
"We've been hearing from friends, we didn't know he was loved by so many people," Hetherington said.
Goodall's sister, Kendra Goodall, said he "always made people feel like they were family. He was quick on saying the right thing."
If she had to pick one word to describe her brother, Kendra Goodall said, it would be "irreplaceable."
"Friends say they'll never have another friend like him," she said.
Goodall, who graduated from the Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad, ran a carpet cleaning business called AC Services. He is also survived by his parents, sister, two half-brothers, infant niece and 14-year-old nephew, who was "like a brother to him."
Services for Goodall will be held at 4 p.m. today at St. James Academy, 623 South Nardo Avenue, Solana Beach.

John E wrote on Mar 20, 2007 2:52 PM:JS has it backward. The answer is not to eschew motorcycles, but for motorists to pay greater attention to the task at hand. The motorcyclist was proceeding along the main road, and the motorist was turning left out of a driveway. Absent additional information, it certainly appears that the motorist is culpable, as the motorcyclist almost definitely ahd the right-of-way. Is Mr. Beim still capable of operating a motor vehicle safely? Many octagenarians are still excellent drivers, but unfortunately, many simply are not. For the record, I choose not to ride a motorcycle out of personal safety concerns, but I am a bicyclist.

We lost out friend Josh Tiscareno in Encinitas in January from a tragic car accident and the questions never cease to stop! But always rememeber the good times and what an honor it was to have known him and had him in your lives!
Alf wrote on Mar 20, 2007 4:22 PM:First, the comment from "Bible Study" was completely out of line when commenting on an article about a death and a grieving family. Second, not having any knowledge of the circumstances, I felt that commenting on the age of the automobile driver would be wrong, without knowing the person. Third, I still pray for all concerned.
sad tragedy wrote on Mar 20, 2007 5:00 PM:A dear friend's son died (he was 18) in October in a nearly identical sounding motorcycle accident in Carlsbad (a car pulled out of a shopping center and hit him). It has been hard for everyone and we hope that the family and friends of Ryan will feel peace again. No amount of searching for answers will bring him back but remember all of the fun memories you shared together. Remember too that the man that hit him is grieving as well and most assuredly has been traumatized. Motorcycles are very dangerous yet we all have the freedom to make choices. Having gone through this horrible process of grieving with our friends, we hope that you will again have peace one day.
Sad tragedy but his friends are saying something different than the family wrote on Mar 20, 2007 5:36 PM:I am one of Ryan's best friends and it didn't surprise me that this happened. Ryan was always riding so fast and it was bound to happen! We told him to slow down but he wouldn't listen. It was just a matter of time. How say what a waste of a life. RIP

It is their freedom of speech to voice their thoughts as much as it is yours. Are you one of those staunch liberals who believe in freedom of speech as long as it's something you agree with? Such hypocrisy.

Tania M wrote on Mar 30, 2007 10:16 PM:It has been 2 wks since the death of my very close friend Ryan Goodall, and I know that I speak for many of his friends when I say that we will never be the same. Ryan was one of a kind, like a diamond extremley rare. I never realized how far from reality I was until I lost him. Like many others my driving on the highways at times was careless. Sad but true, It wasnt until Ryan died that I became a very cautious driver and allert of pedestrains. Following Ryans death their have been several fatal car accidents that have cost the lives of many people in the North County, many of those victims being young adults. I kept pondering how so many lives could be taken in so little amount of time..that maybe it was a qawince-odince or conspiracy..when the reality is that they were all fatal ACCIDENTS..Our lives in fact are in Gods hands, but we must take control and be more careful on the Highways. I have been an Encintas resident my entire life and live directly on the hwy 101. My entire home looks over the hwy and their are so many countless times I see wreckless driving, and more and more their are so many countless, bikers and even more motorcylists. San Diego isn't getting any smaller, and Ryan used to always tell me that it's just the population thats getting bigger which was one of the reasons Goodall even got that bike, to aviod traffic. That's most likley why my boyfriend Jeff and thousands of others are choosing to ride bikes instaed of cars. For those of you who are reading this comment and didn't know Ryan..please be cautious on the highways so you don't have to expereince a loss like the one I'm going through. Regardless of what you drive, everytime you decide to get on road please consider that the stranger driving next to you is taking a risk at trusting that you will be safe with their lives in your hands, as they will do for you..And for those of you who knew Ryan..hang in their and keep holding onto your FAITH. Now all we can do, is give Ryan love..and hope that something like this wont happen again..because most likley it will. Be safe."
Ryan's friend wrote on Apr 1, 2007 10:53 AM:Ryan Goodall was a great friend and I know I will miss him deeply. Please know that my opinion of what happen is really not Ryan's fault. It is my opinion (and would be yours, if you went to the accident site and parked in Frog's parking lot) that this driver went out the "entrance only" and the wrong way at a "one-way" sign. Please help reserve Ryan's reputation and seek the truth.
