Bilbray defeats Busby

SAN DIEGO -- Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Carlsbad, will continue representing San Diego County's 50th Congressional District after defeating Democrat Francine Busby by a wide margin, according to election results Wednesday.

With all of the precincts reporting Wednesday, Bilbray won 53 percent of the vote to Busby's 43 percent, according to the Secretary of State.

Bilbray defeated Busby by about 7,000 votes in the June 6 special election to fill the remainder of Randy "Duke" Cunningham's term after the Vietnam War hero -- now serving an eight-year prison term -- admitted taking about $2.4 million in bribes to influence defense contracts.

The margin in the rematch was about 17,000 votes.

The district, which includes Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, San Marcos, Escondido, Solana Beach and parts of northern San Diego, has long been considered a safe Republican district.

At a campaign party last night at downtown San Diego's U.S. Grant Hotel, Bilbray said his stance on illegal immigration gave him the edge over Busby.

"The fact is that in North County, you can't drive around the corner without seeing illegals flaunting an amnesty program," he said. "You can't go to the Home Depot without being overrun."

Bilbray pledged to work with both parties in Congress on the issue.

"I am going to spend a lot of time with the Senate to make sure they don't give amnesty and sit down with moderate Republicans and moderate Democrats so that they don't allow Ms. Pelosi to give amnesty," Bilbray said.

Busby urged supporters who gathered at an Encinitas bar and grill to "celebrate" the change in leadership in the House.

"We are going to see changes in leadership and restoration of honesty, integrity and ethics to the House of the people in Washington, D.C." Busby said. "We have a lot to celebrate."

Bilbray also thanked his backers.

"With your support, with your efforts, I commit to you that I will make sure that everyone in Washington hears it quite clearly -- San Diego has seen the future and it's a future of bright prosperity based on equality of law, of freedom and of adherence to the law," Bilbray said. "There is a real difference between those that believe in legal immigration and those who believe in illegal immigration."

Despite the loss, Busby expressed appreciation to those who worked on her unsuccessful campaign.

"There is not a campaign in this country that has more passion, more heart and more energy than you have given to the 50th District," she said.

Caron wrote on Nov 9, 2006 7:44 AM:Thank God Bilbray is someone that is going to try and work in Congress with Republicans and Democrats on illegal immigration. I am sick the Repblicans lost for only one reason. Amnesty for Illegal Immigration. The Republicans didn't deserve to win. They should have done something about illegals years ago. Is all they did this past year is jerk the American people around on this issue among others. Now they are paying the price right a long with us.

Don P. wrote on Nov 9, 2006 8:26 AM:It will be great not to see Far Left Francine lurking around anymore, as well as the area's small birkenstock crowd driving their Toyota Prius with Busby stickers on the back. Let's all get behind Congressman Bilbray, who will work hard on the issues we really care about, not the agenda of Air America and MoveOn.org.

Vince, wrote on Nov 9, 2006 8:29 AM:I was so disappointed with the shallow and incoherent diatribe of a victory speech that Bilbray gave on election night. He peppered his acceptance speech with reference to illegal immigratiom leaving me stunned and to realize he really has no vision other than slamming illegal immigration. Don"t get me wrong Busby is not that impressive either. Of course his supporters will defend him and his speech. With a new House and Senate Bilbray will be even more marginalized as he really has nothing to offer other that stale rhetoric on illegal immigration.

They with the ACLU will destroy marriage and promote gay adoptions. Pelosi is saying that our fight is with Afghanistan and that is all. She doesn’t think there is a global war against Islamic extremist. The terrorist got what they wanted, democrats in control of US.

Johnny B Good wrote on Nov 9, 2006 9:46 AM:Bilbray was lucky to find a district he could run based off of 1 issue and party alone and win AND not even BE FROM that district just because the people from that county don't care so long as you say you are tough on illegals and are a white Republican. Do I feel sorry for Brian Bilbray that his party is in the minority now? Yeah...just like I feel sorry for Duke Cunningham rotting in a jail cell! Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go find another conservative county to claim residence in so I can go run for congress on a 1 issue campaign...do you think the gay marriage thing has been played to death or can you still get right wingers to the polls in numbers for it? Where's my carpet bag?

Susan T wrote on Nov 9, 2006 11:31 AM:For starters, I am more of an Independent. I read that Pelosi's husband runs a winery that has illegals, so I think she will support illegal aliens and open borders. Now, there is this matter of Bush always blathering about Terrorism but completely leaves the border wide open. What's up with that? Maybe the answer is: The NORTH AMERICAN UNION. This will combine Mexico, Canada and the U.S. Q: What happens to our constitution? Q: Are we going to be overrun by the 3rd World since we're going to be carte blanche. We just might not a Middle Class any more if this continues. Between outsourcing (still using our tax dollars) and the increasing H1B etc visas, rampant illegal immigration and the planned NAU along with the NAFTA Super Highway and other such roads, AGAIN: What happens to us and that constitution? I think we're in serious trouble and we better be paying very close attention. Just because Mainstream Media isn't really talking about these things doesn't mean the train wreck isn't coming.

Just want everyone wanted, more cheap, and cheaper labor, to everyones wages can go down even further. The criminal employers will now get off scot free, and the rich can still have their nanny's and gardeners at rock bottom prices! Thank you Bush & Democrats!

Nancy wrote on Nov 9, 2006 12:43 PM:The immigration issue has been used successfully to divide our county and promote destructive racism and hatred. Now we have Brian Bilbray,a shallow, single-issue representive who is not equipped to deal with complex problems. Last month when asked what he planned to do to educate the legal Hispanics here in California so that we could continue to have a competitive workforce, he laughed and said he was the wrong person to ask about education! With her background in education, Francine Busby was the right person to ask. She had thoughtful solutions to this and other complex problems. Too bad voters let hatred trump the hard work of thinking.

Ron wrote on Nov 9, 2006 1:37 PM:I heard Bilbray during the campaign speak and what a disappointment. He lacks vision and is uninspiring unless you agree with his tired "blame the Mexicans for everything" mantra. I guess that's all you need to say to get elected. Meanwhile we get nothing more substantial for our district than the blame game. What a minor leaguer!

Patrick wrote on Nov 9, 2006 2:18 PM:Oh that's right Ron, there weren't any criminal employers until today! You know and I know that until Americans stop employing illegal aliens, nothing is going to change, ever.

Robert wrote on Nov 9, 2006 3:23 PM:I think we all understand that now that the Democrats are again in power that Rep Bilbray's job will be much more difficult. I think its now more important than ever that we set politics aside and give Rep. Brian Bilbray all the support we can in his efforts to protect us from this invasion. I for one wish him well and want to let him know he is not alone in his quest for compliance with the laws of our Nation.

American-Irish Resident wrote on Nov 9, 2006 8:37 PM:Nancy appears perplexed in her thoughts with regards to education. The state of California has been ranked as low as bottom five percentile in the USA. This bottom five figure includes children of all races and creeds. The liberal Democrats want to know what can be done to single out legal Latinos in education? Do they want to get the questions answered on how we can also improve the health care and housing of Latino children and not consider any other racial background? Bilbray is a representative of all the people. Busby is a simple folksy PTA person trying to become a Congresswoman and died in those attempts for the 4th time. Has the message been heard yet? Go Bilbray.

Ublewit wrote on Nov 10, 2006 1:53 AM:So the 50th district blows it big time! Now we're stuck with lameo Bilbray regurgitating the illegal mantra in a corner of the congress where nobody will pay attention to him. I can't wait until the dems break this district and give Escondido & Vista to Issa where it belongs and keep the rest and best of North County into another district.

PJGoober wrote on Nov 10, 2006 2:23 AM:OutofCuriousity, Illegal aliens are of all ethnicities and races, from all parts of the world. When you call the anti-illegal immigration stance of Bilbray and others as "hating Mexicans" you perpetuate the harmful and false stereotype that all illegal aliens are Mexicans.

Enron by the Sea continues wrote on Nov 10, 2006 7:12 AM:I continue to be amazed at the blindness here towards what is really wrong and going on and the blinders towards everything else except "immigration". You all want to blame everything on that and ignore everything else. And you don't even do a good job of researching that or you'd learn from articles like this one ( http://www.nctimes.com/articles/2006/08/10/news/sandiego/3_00_008_7_06.txt ) that Brian Bilbray has been using you all and supports "amnest" as you call it like many other Republicans do (and more likely to help corporations get cheap labor than anyone else). Education is probably more of a problem as a result of continuing to underfund property taxes (and therefore education) which will continue as long as corporate landowners are the big winner from prop 13 at new home buyer's expense. And I'm sure you'll love our Busby or other bumper stickers in the coming months when we have to replace both Bilbray and Duncan Hunter when they get indictments. That seems to be the pattern around here. If you want someone that REALLY speaks for how we should feel about immigration, look up Thom Hartman and his comments on record.

Ron wrote on Nov 10, 2006 7:48 AM:When will all the alarmist decrying the "invasion" understand that Mexicans are here to stay. We're not going to do any mass deportations. Besides, the folks you hate are mostly legal residents despite your cry to the contrary. Yes this more about hatred than policy.

Ron wrote on Nov 10, 2006 8:17 AM:Bilbray wants oil companies to be able to drill off our coast, providing jobs, and cheaper gas for you to get to work. And asking people to obey the laws, does not mean you hate anybody, it means you love and respect all of them.

American-Irish Resident wrote on Nov 10, 2006 10:38 AM:It is not thought of as hating the illegal aliens, but it is thought of as loving legal US citizens. The latest dollar cost estimates with regards to educating Mexico's citizenry is at 6 billion dollars per year in California alone. The schools have become overcrowded as a result and California's once proud public school system is a national joke as California pours massive amounts of money on a failing system. The count is over eighty now in terms of how many hospitals have closed in California because the federal government reimburses these institutions at approximately 10 to 15 cents per dollar consumed by the illegal aliens. California's children suffer and California's ill citizens suffer due to these overburdening costs. What is the Democrats' solution? Would the Democrats chose to take Proposition 13 away so that Californians can pay for the people that are legal citizens of Mex Pres Calderon? Illegal aliens may be in general from all parts of the world, but the vast numbers of people from Mexico hugely outweigh the number of illegal aliens from places like Romania and Estonia. I trust Bilbray will fight will great intensity for all of the legal citizens of California. Go Bilbray.

Ron wrote on Nov 10, 2006 1:24 PM:Brian "One Issue" Bilbray has two years to close our borders. He has an uphill battle against the Dems but his strong platform on immigration should carry him through. We should be thankful that someone has our priorities straight.

The Same People wrote on Nov 10, 2006 1:26 PM:The people who voted for Bush in 2004 even after he lied about WMD's and why he got us in Iraq, are the same people who voted for Brian Bilbray in 2006 even after he voted himself a pay raise and voted in favor of offshore drilling. Ya'll should get ready for Brian getting the same kind of thumping that Bush just got, two years from now. Why does it take you people so long to catch up?

SM Resident wrote on Nov 10, 2006 1:32 PM:Just days after Democrats take control of congress Al-Qaida claims it is winning the war. They know that dems love to throw money at problems as long as it isn't their own, and have no stomach to see things through. They know that at the slightest resistance democrats tuck tail and run. The democratic party is endorsed by Osama Bin Laden. No one can be more pleased that liberals have taken over. God help us all. Harry, there is NOTHING "dynamic" about the democrats.

Zenophobic-phobic wrote on Nov 10, 2006 5:45 PM:bryan, your comment on gay marriage is telling. Let me ask, was freedom destroyed when Lincoln freed the slaves? Was democracy destroyed when blacks and women got the vote? Was Christianity destroyed when Hitler was forced to stop killing the Jews? If your marriage is so fragile that it will be destroyed by the love two people you may never meet have for each other, then it is unlikely that your marriage will be saved by any law.

Bill wrote on Nov 11, 2006 12:05 AM:Okay Escondido, you lose. The Republican president, the Republican governor and, according to the exit polls, 58 percent of the American voters, oppose Bilbray's hard line "No Amnesty" position on immigration. Even in Arizona, voters in two Republican districts elected Democrats over Republicans who tried to make illegal immigration the only issue. Most people who don't live in the 50th CD apparently think we need a practical, workable solution to illegal immigration, not just a lot of angry, hate-filled slogans and rhetoric and fences that will do nothing but distribute billions of taxpayer dollars to a some very lucky contractors.

American-Irish Resident wrote on Nov 11, 2006 11:25 AM:The funniest comment of the week originated in Mexico. The Mexican people are concerned and upset about the "Columbia-inization" of Mexico. Apparently the immigration to Mexico from South America is growing. Mexico is already rounding up illegal citizens of Central America and deporting thm. Rocks and glass houses translate into a bad situation. Bilbray is correct in his stand against illegal aliens taking up roots in the USA.

Don P. wrote on Nov 13, 2006 1:57 PM:It is so obvious that Brian Bilbray has only one drum to beat - immigration, and the only reason he beats that drum is because he lobbies for it in congress! I think the 50th will see in a few months that he really has nothing to offer than an open hand asking for money.
