Waldron already got what she sought

Whatever the outcome of last night's Escondido City Council vote on the proposed ordinance to prohibit renting to illegal immigrants (this column is being written ahead of the vote), Councilwoman Marie Waldron has already found a political windfall in her controversial proposal.
Whether it passes or fails, Waldron ---- who is seeking re-election next month ---- has gotten huge mileage out of hitching her wagon to the hot-button illegal immigration debate. She's solidified her conservative base and gotten valuable name recognition with the undecided voters. Sure, she's alienated a huge swath of the community with her ham-fisted approach to immigration ---- but for her conservative base, ticking off the liberals is only more gravy.
So from Waldron's perspective, it's unlikely to matter whether her proposal actually becomes law or not. What matters is looking good to voters.
Now, would her proposal actually do anything?
Hard to see how. If it's overcrowded rental units she's concerned with, there are already laws on the books to address that.
Then again, Waldron claimed to be "protecting children" when she railed against private nudity in Escondido last year and sicced the cops on a private nudist club having a monthly swim party at the Iceoplex.
So efficacy doesn't appear to be one of her strong suits.
Whatever else Waldron's proposal may bring about, improved conditions in the city of Escondido won't be on top of that list.
The proposal is a dumb distraction that, like Waldron's hissy fit over private nudity last year, takes our attention away from real issues facing Escondido. Traffic. Economic revitalization. All the energy going into the rallies and protests on both sides of this issue surely could have been put to better use than in tilting at a windmill the courts have ruled repeatedly falls under federal jurisdiction.
Yes, unchecked illegal immigration impacts our community. Nobody but the most ardent pro-immigration activists disputes that.
But Escondido can't stop illegal immigration any more than it can stop people from being naked in private.
If Marie Waldron really wants to improve the quality of life in Escondido, there are a lot of issues that need her attention ---- issues that are properly and legally the province of a city government. How to improve traffic flow through the city during rush hour. How to slow folks down in and around school zones so our children have a safe commute to and from school each day. How to help businesses succeed and even thrive throughout the city. How to get the California Center for the Arts into the black.
Those issues take a community working together if we want to solve them. Introducing a red herring like immigration only turns neighbor against neighbor and makes it that much more difficult to solve city-sized problems at a city level.
Perhaps when she's done with trying to solve national issues at a city level, Waldron can get back to solving problems she actually has influence over.
Then again, a skeptic might point out that Waldron has had almost eight years to talk about those issues, instead of nudity and immigration.

She has completely lost my respect and trust and she is incapable now of representing us in the best interest of the city. This woman and her supporters have no ethics and definetely do not care about Escondido. Shame on Waldron, Abed and Gallo. Mr. Trageser, my gratitude to you for your accurate interpretation of this situation. Let's always still to the fact snad common sense..this will always move us forward instead of backwards. Again...thank you.
Political Gold Mine! wrote on Oct 5, 2006 12:09 PM:Immigration has replaced abortion as the political gold mine for politicians. Why? Because Mexico is a corrupt country and the radicalized Chicanos are indoctrinating the illegal immigrants with fables of Atzlan in a misguided attempt to effect a reconquest of California. Thus, the vein of this political gold will be much more emotional and productive in winning votes for skilled politicians than the abortion issue ever was! Senate hearings on future Supreme Court justices will hinge more on a judge's temperment and disposition on immigration cases than on the now paid out issue of abortion. The winds of American politics have changed direction. The Mexican invasion will fail in its purposes, but only after a decades long struggle to reverse the decades long neglect of the administrations of Clinton and the two Bushes. Stop the Invasion! Now!

Undocumented immigrants are not pests, they are humans and deserve as many rights as anybody else. This is just racisim, hate and intolerance, plain and simple. Unbelievable that this is happening in the year 2006.

Gary in Murrieta wrote on Oct 5, 2006 9:03 PM:Why is that when a Politician tackles Illegal Immigration they are accused of jumping on the bandwagon? I see it a different way. I see politicians finally taking notice of what the people want, who elected them there in the first place. I see President Bush finally bending to the will of the people and signing the fence law. I see Democrats in California finally starting to vote the way the majority of the way registered voters want. Isn't that the way the system is supposed to work. The elected politicians represent the will of the people. Right now overpopulation and illegal immigration are very important issues facing the United States, and small towns all over America.
Gary wrote on Oct 5, 2006 9:14 PM:Small towns all across America are going broke trying to provide services for illegal aliens who show up on their doorsteps without any notice. In Menifee, the city cannot keep up with all of the new students that show up every month. I realize that a lot of them are due to the massive construction of new tract homes, but then I become suspicious when 40% of them do not speak English. The same is happening in Escondido where they are building schools, where none were needed before. There should be a way of charging the newly arrived illegal aliens a price to put their kids in school as I know they never paid any city or state taxes to help in their construction and operation. These activists screaming for illegal aliens rights must think that all social services come for free. Just ask any union school teacher what he or she makes, and then you would know what I mean.

Skip wrote on Oct 5, 2006 10:15 PM:RE: It will ruin our plan to populate the country with Mexicans!!!!>> You should be ashamed of yourself for that statement. These people are coming from a failed country. They are predominately uneducated and unskilled. Of course they will come, because they have nothing to loose. The question is: How many more can we absorb without becoming like the countries they come from. Ten million more, Twenty million, Thirty million? Who is going to sponsor them, and build the infrastructure? Will you? You do not sound like an American Citizen, but then again you are not a Mexican Citizen either, as you are already here.
dennis wrote on Oct 6, 2006 9:34 AM:It is phenomenal that everytime a stand is made against the illegal invasion of this country, it is labeled racist. Since when are Mexicans and other illegals a separate and distinct race? They are simply illegally entering this country which can not absorb them without seriuos degradation of the culture and they happen to be prominently Mexicans who do not assimilate. We have every right to determine who and how and how many enter here. Plain and simple national soverenty
Right On, Jim wrote on Oct 18, 2006 9:25 PM:Superb column! The intelligence in your writing was desperately needed. I have grown so very weary of the "stop the invasion" language that is poring out of every orifice of most of the supporters of the rental ban. I feel sorry for the many legal Hispanics that will be discriminated against because of this "poor excuse" of an ordinance. I also feel sorry for the supporters because they seem to have closed minds and closed hearts. Supporters of the ban will be let down because of the "Wham, Bam, Thank You Ma'am Ban" was hastily written and ends at the City level. Well, anyway...Thank You, Jim. It was nice to read your column!
Think4yourself wrote on Oct 21, 2006 6:30 PM:On a local level there may be issues that seem more relevant than illegal immigration; but why is it a bad thing for Waldron to show some back bone and at least attempt to use the powers of the Escondido City Council to fight the illegal immigration problem that is, yes, a federal government problem, but is managed so poorly at the federal level that local governments are forced to address the issue on their own in a proactive manner? If you want to discredit Councilwoman Waldron it is your right, but what she tried to do was the result of frustrated resignation due to the federal government completely dropping the ball on immigration. Washington, particularly Congress, is so afraid of alienating the hispanic vote they could never decide what to do until the public outcry left them no where to hide. What a sorry ass way to come to a clear moment, but such is the state of elected officials in our Congress. No one worth running will take the job anymore. Too much hypocrisy and b.s.
