Charm the Giant wins at Del Mar
Even-money favorite Charm the Giant made her move on the far turn, then went steadily through the stretch to win Monday's $75,100 allowance feature at Del Mar by 1 3/4 length.
The winner, an Irish-bred daughter of Giant's Causeway, raced a mile on the turf in a rapid 1 minute, 33.04 seconds under her regular jockey Alex Solis and returned $4.
Polyfirst finished second in the filly-mare headliner, a half-length ahead of Lock And Key in the seven-horse field.
Akamine honored
Recent Escondido High graduate Sarah Akamine was one of 30 players nationwide selected to the EA SPORTS All-American High School Softball team. Akamine, who will attend the University of Arizona in the fall, was named as a multipurpose player.
Akamine had a 0.16 ERA and helped the Cougars win the CIF San Diego Section Division I title. She also batted.468 Akamine, another EA SPORTS All-American headed to Arizona, also was one of the top hitters in the section. She had a .468 batting average.
