OCEANSIDE ---- Two beauty college students were improving Thursday after they were hurt when a car crashed through the front of a building and into their table and bench, a police officer said.

The accident happened about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Oceanside College of Beauty, 1575 S. Coast Highway, Officer Ken Newsom said. Erna Dudzik, 84, of Oceanside accidentally hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes as she pulled into the parking lot and struck the metal table and bench where at least eight students were sitting. Her car then continued forward and hit the front of the building shattering the large windows.

"She's not going to be arrested; it was an accident," Newsom said.

The girls are recovering nicely, he said. They were taken to a hospital mostly for precautionary reasons, Newsom said.

I can't speak with specifics on this one person, but age alone is not enough to determine a persons ability to safely operate a motor vehice. My grandfather drove until the day he died (at age 77) and never had so much as a speeding ticket let alone an accident. Compare that to a 26 year old friend I had who totaled 2 cars in 2 years. Now tell me which one should have had their license revoked?

Ask any insurance company, wrote on Jul 10, 2006 1:33 PM:or any police station, about which age drivers are the most dangerous and the answer is quite clear. One problem is to think that a test for relicensing would do the trick. Young people pass the tests, but fail as drivers more than anyone. I agree, though, that reckless driving, endangering people, should be punished severely, with a long long loss of license.

Shirley wrote on Jul 11, 2006 1:24 PM:Sorry, oldsters, but you really should not be driving! Your slow reactions and caution have been the cause of many accidents, and I see you drive away clueless of what you caused or almost caused. As to Ace, hopefully when you cause someone to die because of your bad driving, you can live with yourself.

Jon wrote on Jul 12, 2006 7:44 AM:When are the OLD people going to stop using that same lame excuse(I stepped on the gas instead of the break pedao)!!! There has been may times that I have been nearly run off the road by an oldtimer because they didn't or couldn't look over their shoulder to make a safe lane change! I am afraid to use my horn because I don't want to freak them out! I'VE SEEN THEM GET FREAKED OUT BY THE HORN! They are always driving 50 miles under the limit, they act like they are the only ones on the road, and they break suddenly alot! If you can seclude yourself to live in a retirement community, then you should be included in an annual DMV test!

Ace wrote on Jul 12, 2006 9:02 PM:Reasonable accomodation...Its time for all you youngsters to slow down. When I'm doing 80 MPH in the fast lane and someone is trying to go around me I move over if safe to do so I stay with the flow of traffic and gladly move over for all you young racers. I say ban young people up to 30 years of age from driving. Now who's the real hazard here Shirley?

ban young people over 65 years of age wrote on Jul 13, 2006 8:09 AM:Old drivers are hazards! Every so often you hear about an old person jumping the curb running into pedestrians or crashing into a building that is nowhere near the street. Or how about that old man up in Santa Monica that ran over a crowd of people at a farmers market. He drove three blocks while hitting dozens of people and only stopped until someone landed on his windshield. He injured 54 and killed 10 because he stepped on the wrong pedal(how often do we hear this)!!! They don't cause injuries to themselves. They injure others with their timid, indecisive, disoriented driving! So who's the real hazard?

Twila wrote on Jul 6, 2007 8:41 AM:I'm so glad the students are OK. I attended the same school 6 years ago and I hate that something that horrific happened.
